Montagne Pelée erupted in 1902 and killed all but one the 30,000 residents of St Pierre in three minutes flat. The only survivor was a local drunk who was locked in the police cell at the time! It is possible to get a guided walk up to the top of the volcano, if you do go, try to get a clear day as the view from the top is incredible. However, the top of the volcano is usually covered by clouds - There is a saying that 'if you can see the top on your first sighting of the volcano, then you are sure to return to Martinique'. I was quite pleased by this, as the peak was quite visible when we first set eyes upon it. Leave a Comment Address: Goto St Pierre - you cannot miss it!

Walk the streets of Fort-de-France and experience the hussel and bussel of Paris of the West Indies. On a weekend it's normal to see parades and bands playing through the streets. The streets are really alive and full of culture! *Remember since it is European shops may close for 2-3 hours for lunch* Leave a Comment

Fort-de-France, the capital, is wonderful to explore on foot. Among the sightseeing attractions is the city's architectural masterpiece, the Bibliothèque Schoelcher, or Schoelcher Library, a Romanesque-Byzantine gem built 100 years ago for the Paris Exposition of 1889, then dismantled and shipped to Martinique mosaic by mosaic. Named for Victor Schoelcher, the French abolitionist whose work helped end slavery on the island in 1848, it sits just off La Savane, the central park. La Savane's gardens make for pleasant strolling and picture-taking, and boast two impressive statues: one of Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, the French nobleman who claimed the island for France in 1635, the other of Marie Josephe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie, who was born in Trois Ilets across the bay, and made history as Napoléon's Empress Joséphine. Sunbathing at Les Salines! This has been voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Just as you would imagine a paradise beach. The long, white-sand beach has warm clear blue sea, and a few beach bars hidden under the palm trees. Leave a Comment Directions: Les Salines is at the very southern most tip of the island. Take the N5 or N6 to Le Marin, then the D9 through St Anne. When you arrive at the beach - head right - you catch more sun!Other Contact: The beach is not one for scuba o

In addition to the fantastic pure white sand and black volcanic sand beaches (on different parts of the island), you must visit some of the fishing villages around Martinique. You should visit Bellefontaine which is a neat village set atop a cliff, St. Pierre where they have a neat Museum of Vulcanology, Morne Vernt which is sit atop a mountain and provides a great view of the island's volcano Mt. Pelee, Ajoupa-Bouillon where there is a beautiful walk through mini-gorges to a waterfall surrounded by tropical vegetation. I also enjoyed seeing the St. James Rum Museum and Distillery in Sainte Marie. A great island drink is the 'Planteur' which effectively is a mix of cane sugar rum with cane sugar syrup -- very refreshing indeed!!! Of course, I also had to visit Le Robert where fish farming techniques are being studied. Leave a Comment
