BIRD WATCHTOWER AT PORTOMARI!

This tower halfway along the new bird watching trail at Portomari offers a vast view of the plantation grounds – and also a fabulous view of the various birds and other animals that inhabit the area. Included is a panel with information on the 16 most common birds.
The bird watching trail starts at the beach and meanders its way through old dams and wells towards the old plantation house, much of which was destroyed in bad weather in 1936. In keeping with Portomari’s ecological philosophy, the watchtower is constructed of durable material. Old wire poles and wooden boards – leftovers from other projects – have been used for the floor, the stairs and part of the roof.
There is a book available wich offers you a variety of walking trails all over the island. The trails lead you to specific points of natural or cultural interest.

The sea aquarium was definitly a hit with the little one in our group.
We could have spent the whole day watching the animals there.
All we really had time for was to see the sea lion show and then we had to leave for the airport.

The proprietor of where I stayed recommended this as the best place to snorkel. I would have to agree. Caracas Baai is a series of long beaches separated by rocks. I drove all the way past the fort to the last beach. At the end is a scuba place. There is a nice snorkeling spot called the Tugboat where there is a sunken tugboat. The beach at this end is not the greatest but the snorkeling is very good. I also had my best meal here on the way to the beach. There is also an interesting small fort here that you can climb up and get a great view of the surrounding area.

...visit Baya Beach Club at Caracasbay Island.

Surprise! Combine history with sun, sea, sand and partying! Baya Beach Club is ideal for a day at, in, on or around the water with he family. During the day you can swim, bake in the sun, ride the boat, waterbike, canoe, hike, ride horseback, have a nice lunch and some tropical drinks. A beautiful site to see the sun set. At night you can mingle with the locals and dance till morning. Also to visit on the Baya Beach grounds: Fortress Beekenburg (17th century, dutch)

    The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge

  • World famous bridge - Curaçao
    World famous bridge
    by spartan
The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge (which locals refer to as 'the Swinging Lady') is the world's largest floating pedestrian bridge. Built in 1888 by an American consul, a toll was charged to help recoup the costs. However, the consul decided to charge only those who could afford shoes. The idea was that people who could afford shoes were rich and people who couldn't afford shoes were poor. His good intentions backfired when he realized that the poor folks were to proud to admit their poverty and often borrowed shoes to cross, and the rich folks, too stingy to pay the toll, were often crossing barefoot. There is no charge today regardless of your footwear. The bridge is 700 ft. long and swings open up to 30 times a day to receive ships into St. Anna Bay.

The remarkable carvings dating back as far as 1,500 years, make the Hato Caves in itself a very interesting site to visit. Add the knowledge that the caves were the place where runaway slaves used to hide, and the fact that is still known as a popular meeting place to perform ancient religious ceremonies, and you know it is place you ought to have seen before you leave Curaçao. The Caves are open Tuesday through Sunday; multi-lingual tours are given on the hour from 10 am to 5 pm.; admission is $6.25 for adults, and $4.75 for children under 13.

There is a number of parks open to the public. The Christoffel Park belongs to the main tourist attractions of Curaçao. It's visited by a large number of people, both locals and visitors from abroad.
I just visited the Christoffel Park with my nephews, Timothy (10) and Matthew (5). Of course the guys choose to follow the longest, 2 hours during trail. And we had a great time! Also climbed the bird's watch tower. There are various trails to choose from, like a mountain bike trail, or one climbing the island's highest 'mountain' (377 meters).
The park extends to both sides of the road to Westpunt, west of the village of Barber. The mountain from which the park took its name, dominates the park that consists of the former plantations Savonet, Zorgvlied en Zevenbergen. It is rather big and offers enough possibilities to wander about for a few days. In the outbuildings at the park's entrance a small souvenir shop, a simple café terrace and a museum are situated.

    Curacao beaches are paradise beaches.
One of the biggest beach (wich is not very big) is Knip Beach (see picture)

If you don't like crowded beaches, you might want to avoid Sundays, when the locals come here to have a day full of fun and barbeque!

The Dutch have left their lasting mark on Curacao in many areas, but perhaps none as striking as the architecture. Nowhere else in the world outside of the Netherlands are there so many exquisite 17th and 18th Century Dutch colonial buildings.

The city of Willemstad dates from the Dutch capture of Curacao by victory over the Spanish in 1634. While the Spaniards had been content to erect simple stone dwellings, the Dutch began to fortify the island. Willemstad is divided in two by Santa Anna Bay. The oldest part, Punda ("The Point") is east of the harbor mouth.

Early settlers brought with them all their traditions, including their architecture and their notion of what made a proper home. In time, styles were modified to fit the realities of a dry and breezy climate by incorporating Caribbean influences such as verandas, porches, fretwork and shutters -- and by adopting a palette of Caribbean colors undreamed of in Amsterdam.

Along what are now Columbusstraat, Madurostraat and Handelskade ("Commerce Street") the up-and-coming Dutch Protestant merchants built their combined offices, warehouses, stores and living quarters. The basic layout of this area, with its narrow perpendicular streets, hasn't changed over the centuries.

Especially beautiful are the restored mansions of Scharloo and Pietermaai, dating from the 1700's. These neighborhoods, along with the historic city center in Willemstad, have been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, commemorating their unique value to the world's cultural and natural heritage. Along with Schottegat Harbor, the largest in the Caribbean, they have joined the ranks of the extraordinary: the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Acropolis, and Vatican City are also on the UNESCO list.

Just north of town Willemstad, near Hato International Airport, are the Hato Caves. The caves, gouged out of limestone cliffs ages ago as the island emerged from the sea, are still forming, albeit by one drop at a time. You will see water dripping from the walls and massive stalactites that hang from the ceiling.

In these caves the slaves where hiding in the past, sometimes for months.

But already before the Europeans these caves where usd by the Ararwak Indians.
In the caves you'll find some paintings and petroglyphes from about 1.500 years old.

De guide is telling you very nice stories about the cave and it's origin.........not all the stories are true...........but it sure sounds funny !
Some stalacmites and stalactites have names like Piratehead and Seaturtle.

The most amazing view is the Madonna ( Maria ).........she's really in the cave !
