Riffort is now a shopping mall in Curacao by dlytle Riffort was built in 1828, on the Otrobanda side of the harbor entrance, to compliment the Waterfort or Fort Amsterdam (on the Punda side) and defend the outer section of Otrobanda. These two forts have guarded Curacaos harbor against pirates and enemies for centuries. Riffort was constructed to store the chain with which the harbor could be locked up. The chain could be transported from Otrobanda to Punda with an unsinkable raft. The Riffort had its own barracks, canon, powder magazine and rainwater storage tanks. It was considered completely bombproof. During World War II a steel net was stretched across the bay between Waterfort and Riffort to prevent enemy ships, especially submarines from entering the harbor. In the course of time the Riffort has housed the Authority, Public Works, the police and even Boy Scouts have found shelter here. Nowadays it houses a modern shopping mall and a restaurant whose terrace overlooks the harbor. Leave a Comment Directions: Towards to Mega Pier Cruise Terminal at the mouth of the harbor on the Otrobanda side of the town.

This is a must see when you go to Willemstad. The museum is located in many different buildings and its is absolutely beautiful. The museum spans ancient history to mostly slave history and specifically slaves in Curacao. You could potentially spend a lot of time here or not much time at all. There is a gift shop, sculpture garden, coffee shop and cafe area. Directions: On the Otroband side of Willemstad. Take the ferry from Punda and turn right. Follow the signs.

snorkeling by Valeggua Bring your snorkeling or dive gear, Curacao has some of the clearest water in the Caribbean, with average visibility running anywhere from 80-140 feet (25-40m) which will help you fully appreciate the 80 miles of pristine coral reef encircling the island. Tropical fish, sea turtles, seahorses, eels, and (if you're lucky) even dolphins just swimming around you! I found a website with 80 different dive locations: http://www.curacao-actief.com/index.php?id=3

This is an interesting area to walk around. If its a hot day think twice about visiting the park because there is absolutely no shade. In some areas there are lots of cactus but mostly there's just a lot of rocks. Bring lots of water because you cannot buy any there. You can spend about 2 hours here walking around (or you can even drive to each sight). There is one main trail that leads you to three areas along the water. The most southern sight is called Boka Pistol. Here is a cool area where the ocean meets the rocks and creates a blowhole where the water shoots up and out. The next sight is called Boka Kalki. Here is another beach stop. People have left pebbles and rocks as messages on the beach. The last sight is Boka Wandomi. This was my favorite. Make sure you climb sown the stairs to the sand. One side of the cliff has man made chairs and seats that are fun. You can also see a natural bridge that reaches out into the ocean. There is also a cave that you can go into. Entrance fee was NAfl 2,65. Directions: Near Westpunt on the east side of the island. If you are coming from the east drive past the entrance for Christoffel Park.

Messages by kyoub Down on the beach at Boka Wandomi many visitors have left their marks by artfully placing rocks in the black sand beach or on the tops of huge boulders to form their names or messages to lovers. Leave a Comment

by bijo69 The pontoon bridge was built in 1888 and connects Punda and Otrobanda. It swings open to let ships pass the canal in and out of the harbour. If the bridge is open, free ferries shuttle between the two parts of town. Leave a Comment Address: Willemstad

Penha building by kyoub This store, located across from the Queen Emma Bridge is very hard to miss. It was constructed in 1707, making it the oldest building in Willemstad. There are small replicas sold at shops all over town. Leave a Comment
