An ideal holiday spot for divers.

Curacao was born millions of years ago, developing under the sea from lava rock on which coral has grown for centuries. For millions of years reefs have surrounded the island, attaching to the shore like a narrow fringe. In some places they are like beautiful gardens, with delicate corals and are home to brightly coloured tropical fish. In others, massive coral formations extend into depths with deep-water fish patrolling the plunging walls.

It is no wonder that diving is one of the most popular sports on Curacao.

Hato Caves

Just north of town Willemstad, near Hato International Airport, are the Hato Caves. The caves, gouged out of limestone cliffs ages ago as the island emerged from the sea, are still forming, albeit by one drop at a time. You will see water dripping from the walls and massive stalactites that hang from the ceiling.

In these caves the slaves where hiding in the past, sometimes for months.

But already before the Europeans these caves where usd by the Ararwak Indians.
In the caves you'll find some paintings and petroglyphes from about 1.500 years old.

De guide is telling you very nice stories about the cave and it's origin.........not all the stories are true...........but it sure sounds funny !
Some stalacmites and stalactites have names like Piratehead and Seaturtle.

The most amazing view is the Madonna ( Maria ).........she's really in the cave !

At the west end of the island is the impressive Christoffel Park, part of the island's national park system since 1978. The park, about a 40-minute drive from Willemstad, is the home of the 1,239-foot (377-meter) Mt. Christoffel, the island's highest point, as well as dozens of species of trees and plants, including an orchid forest, birds, lizards, and sea life, including nesting sea turtles.

The Savonet plantation house (one of the oldest on the island) at the entrance to the park serves as a nature conservancy and visitors' center, and houses the new Museum of Natural and Cultural History. A guidebook of the park may be purchased here to point out the geological, botanical, and zoological features for hikers taking any of the park's eight well-marked trails.

You can explore the park on foot, horseback, by mountain bike, car or jeep.
Mountain bikes, jeeps and four-wheel drive vehicles are available for rent.

If rented the four-wheel drive vehicle which was very very cool !!

Big Knip is very popular at the local people.
And they are right !!!

Also little Knip is loved by the locals. They come at this beach with their whole family to have a barbeque or just playing on the beach or swimming in the clear sea.

Don't expect to be alone at this beach !

Beaches
Tetreus profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Tetreus 652 reviews

Curaçao has over 35 beaches with a remarkable variety. Whether you are a sun-loving vacationer or a resident enjoying a day off, you can choose between intimate rocky coves surrounded by massive cliffs or long sandy beaches, either secluded by nature or bustling with activities.

The one thing they all share is crystal clear turquoise water and picture-perfect weather. Almost all of the bathing beaches are scattered along the sheltered and calm southwestern coast, where the waters are calm and crystal clear !!!!

These are your picks for lazy relaxation, when you want all the creature comforts close at hand. At some beaches admission is charged, sometimes including a beach chair.

Feeding time

The sea aquarium was definitly a hit with the little one in our group.
We could have spent the whole day watching the animals there.
All we really had time for was to see the sea lion show and then we had to leave for the airport.

All inclusive resort

Spend a fun filled day at Breezes Super Club.
We found an offer we couldn't resist in one of our brochures.
It said we could spend the day at Breezes, all food, drinks, activities included for one price.
Everyone enjoyed our day here and wished they could have spent the whole week.
We swam, played volleyball, went out in a kayak, ate breakfast ,lunch ,and dinner from lavish buffets. Plus we enjoyed the almost 1,500 feet of white sand beach.

Kura Hulanda Museum

Hotel Kura Hulanda facade

A fascinating and visceral approach to understanding the history of slavery in the Netherland Antilles, the Kura Hulanda is a museum of anthropology. Its downside is that it presents a confusing variety of subjects, from the prehistory of early man to pre-Columbian gold crafts. However, the most notable exhibit of the museum is the history of the slave trade in the region. Torture devices, metal restraints, and even the belly of a galleon carry slaves is exhibited poignantly. It is one thing to read about slavery, but another thing to experience it first hand by handling the manacles that were used to bind people and sitting on a reconstructed platform below the decks of a slave ship. The platform "beds" were eerily reminiscent of those built in the concentration camps of Auschwitz.

My son is behind those fish somewhere!

We visited the Seaqurium twice for about 4 hrs each, once to swim with the dolphins, see dolphin show and tour the grounds and once to dive in their lagoon and feed rays, fish, sharks and turtles. (sharks and turtles are behind thick plexiglass and you feed them through a hole)
