Don't forget your passport or i.d.'s

by BROOKS

No locks upon entering USA As light as possible, chic clothing for dinner or clubs. Bring medicines in their original containers so you don't have to throw them away. Pack well so liquids don't spill in your checked luggage. A digital camera would be the best and maybe going to an internet cafe' to downloand and e-mail home. Yes, swim shorts for men and bathing suit for ladies. There are many, many wonderful beaches on St. Maarten and the Antilles. US Passport and tickets. Carry your passport with you at all times whenever you're out of the USA or your home country.

What to Wear

by TRimer

Casual summer clothes are fine year-round. Nightlife tends to be informal, so whatever is currently fashionable in evening resortwear is acceptable. A lightweight jacket for men and a sweater for women is recommended for the occasional cool evening. Scanty beach attire and short-shorts are considered improper in urban areas. Jackets and ties are rarely required. Probably the greatest danger to travelers in the tropics is overexposure to the sun. Remember to work on your tan gradually and use plenty of sunscreen. Of course, it's also a good idea to take along some mosquito repellent as well. Voltage is 220 AC, 60 cycles. Appliances made in the U.S. and Canada require French plug converters and transformers.

There is not much benefit from a backpack compared to hard suitcases. Mainly because you can expect the bags to be treated rather hard and also because you won't be doing very much walking with the bags on such small islands, with roads that are designed for cars driving on them, not people biking or walking. The weather is hot, but short pants will not make it cooler. They will however allow nasty sandfleas to bite you constantly. Perhaps some ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) to keep you from dehydrating if you happen to get sick, but it's probably wiser to buy these if you really need them; anything medical you might need is probably available as long as it's a common item. Try bringing your own film because film is overpriced in shops. Do not develop pictures, this is also overpriced (50 cents per photo is not uncommon). Batteries are available but of course also somewhat more...

As with any trip, ask your carrier (cruise line, airline) what you are allowed to carry with you.Bring a comfortable backpack to carry personal items in such as cameras etc... It is always warm in the Netherland Antilles and the French West Indies, so bring what you would normally bring to any tropical location: shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and bathing suits. It is always a good idea to bring some rain gear just in case. The sun in the tropics is very hot (on the Islands the temperature itself isn't oppressive, but the high angle of the sun makes it very strong), so bring plenty of sunscreen and aloe vera for later after you're back indoors. You can get a sunburn very quickly in the tropics, even if you aren't fair-skinned. Bring plenty of film (in tourist areas buying more film can be rather expensive, an in some places, like Pinel Island, are fairly isolated), and if you have a video...

Definitely bring a camera. Plenty of colors and natural marvels on the island. And how else would you get your pictures on VT anyway? Bring plenty of bathing suits and sunscreen because St. Maarten has many great tropical beaches to relax at.

Bring a good pair of hiking shoes or sneakers if you're planning on clibing Saba's Mt. Scenery. Bring plenty of water with you. Some people also like to bring toilet paper :) This picture was taken at Mt. Scenery's peak.

Pack a bathing suit if you are modest and a coverup to protect you from the sun when you get burned and lots of sun block! These are optional. It is just like being at home-take the regular stuff. Plan on taking lots of pictures. I take a digital and an APS for al of those wide angle shots.

Light and small, if you're travelling on your own like me. 1 Separate change for the flight, which you can also wear on the flight back, remember it's 10 hours until you reach your destination, so it should be something you feel confortable in. In my bag : 2 dresses for the beach, 2 for the evenings. One pair of trousers and a top with a little cardigan, it may be windy if it rained during the day.Flat heel sandals but if you plan to go walking take also confortable tenis shoes (I didn't).String bikini, which is allowed in any beach and will be the envy of your friends when you return, with only two white triangles carefully positioned. An extra bikini. Sun screen, hat and knickers. Shampoo, aftersun, sunscreen (deep tanning). Take something to spray your arms and legs in the evenings, some places have mosquitos. Electricity points and voltage are different in both sides of the...

Please, please make sure your name and address are attached on all luggage since it usually always arrives late. It normally comes on the next flight when this happens and American Airlines is usually very responsive on this. Take photos of all the luggage you're bringing if possible! They will ask you to identify them using a chart with photos of different types of luggage (this can be frustrating since we don't normally look at it everyday). Do try to be at Princess Juliana Airport when it arrives. NO one is allowed in the area where luggage is displayed on the conveyer as customs does prohibit that. You will need a darn good reason to be allowed in that area. E.g. rental car reservations or pick-up or luggage issues. It's always above 80F/27C especially during daytime hours. It can get up to almost 90F/35C many times. You may want to consider sandals and nice cotton attire. Be trendy...
