In 1963 the island built a 400 metre landing strip for easier trips to the island using aircraft: Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. This landing strip is reputed to be the shortest commercial runway in the world, and as such, only three models of airplane are able to land there regularly. Consistent air service from Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius is available through Windward Islands Airways (Winair). The small airport comes equipped with a fire station and an air control tower.

    Ferry or Flight

by bsfreeloader Written Feb 22, 2008

Getting to Saba requires you to either fly into one of the shortest commercial runways in the world or take a ferry across choppy, vomit-inducing waters. After taking the ferry, I have to believe flying is the better option. Although I didn't get sick, at least a half dozen other passengers did on both crossings.

If you don't have much time to make your way over from St Maarten, or if you just want to say you landed on the shortest commercial runway in the world, you'll be flying WinAir. My experience was fine, but because of weight restrictions, weather concerns and just general small-airline snafus, alot of people arrived on Saba without their luggage. Some waited for days...... there are a couple of ferries that make the run if you have the time.

Located 28 miles southwest of St. Maarten, Saba is reached by a short 12 minute flight on Windward Island Airways. Winair (airline code WM) provides 5 conveniently scheduled connecting flights to and from St. Maarten each day.

Warning" These flights are SUPER SCARY and you will often see the local fire truck parked close to the end of the runway ... just in case!

You can now easily e-ticket your Winair flight. Go to Winair's revamped website: http://www.fly-winair.com to look at scheduling options and direct e-ticketing. Be sure you have access to a printer before going forward with a credit card purchase. You'll need to produce the printout at the ticket counter!!!

Daily air travel to and from St. Maarten is offered by American, Delta, Continental, US Airways, Air France, Air Holland, Vacation Express and KLM.

While hiking and walking are common activities on Saba there are times you really need to take a taxi. The taxis on Saba are all government regulated,; there is no need to establish the price ahead of time and there is no haggling. Every trip will cost you the same every time regardless of who the driver is.
We were on Saba for 10 days in December 2005. While we rode with several drivers, all of whom were friendly & efficient, we did most of our riding with Eddie Peterson whose wife Evette runs the Trail Shop in Windwardside.
Eddie is a 4th generaton Saban and he clearly loves his island paradise. He had lots of stories about the island and it's people and of course he knew all the best lookout sites.
You really can't go wrong with any of the taxis on Saba but I highly recommend Eddie.
