Orient Beach (yes a horse also needs his sunbath ! by eenelfje St. Maarten has 37 beautifull beaches ! Mullet Bay, Dawn Beach, Orient Bay and Pinel Island are the most beautifull. Mullet Bay Very nice beach. And when the planes land you see them from a distance flying over very low !! Very nice view ! Orient Beach Lined with tiki huts, colorful beach chairs and restaurants. Orient offers the greatest variety of water sports. The surrounding aqua waters have been recognized as a marine reserve. The waters are not rough, so this is an ideal spot to see what lies below! Island of Pinel This small island, located off the shores of French Cul de Sac, is a must see! The water is calm and shallow, accompanied by beautiful beaches and lovely snorkeling. There are two restaurants on this island...this is a quick trip to paradise! Getting to and from Pinel: a ferryboat ($5) leaves frequently crossing from Cul de Sac to Pinel. Dawn Beach Another famous spot for its views of sunrise and sunset, the white sands of this beach are worth a visit! Surrounded by coral reef, the calm waters of Dawn beach make for some fabulous snorkeling. This quiet beach is perfect for R & R and a special picnic lunch! Baie Longue This beach is the longest white sand beach on the island. Just hire a car and see all the lovely beaches and decide which beach you like the most ! Leave a Comment

Mullet Bay Beach by eenelfje Maho is a small beach, but its location is what attracts all of its visitors. Just of the touchdown point at Juliana Airport, this beach is the closest one could ever get to a 747 landing or take off! Bring your camera! There is a bar where everybody gathers to see this spectacle ! Its really amazing. The airplanes fly so low you almost can "touch" them !! (Ofcourse take care of the safety precautions !) Unfortunately I havent taken any pictures of it only one from the airplane view of Mullet Bay. Leave a Comment

Happy Bay Beach by wadekorzan There are 36 beaches on St. Maarten, and we went to many of them. We followed a local's recommendation to find Happy Beach. It was also listed in a magazine as "the most beautiful beach on St. Maarten". What is nice about this beach is that it is extremely beautiful, you have great snorkeling and swimming, and there are very few people. To get there, you have to drive to Friar's Bay Beach. You then walk to the end of that beach and then you arrive at a path going up and over the hill to Happy Beach. It's about a 10 minute walk in the sun, so it can be quite hot, but it's worth the effort. Leave a Comment

Marigot by wadekorzan We really liked Marigot very, very much. Take the time to explore it. Right down by the harbor there is a handicrafts market which is very colorful (though it is like all of the other handicraft markets we had seen on other islands), there is a very very nice little shopping center called "Plaza las Indias" (GREAT AIR CONDITIONING), and one street back from the harbor you have the main shopping street of town, which is really nice. There you'll find stores like Hermes, so imagine. At the end of the shopping street you have Port Royale Marina, which was great for shopping and for restaurants. We had a fantastic dinner there--simple food where we ate but the atmosphere was excellent and I wouldn't miss it. Leave a Comment

Philipsburg by wadekorzan Sint Maarten is divided between France and the Netherlands, and each side has its own capital. I think any visit to Sint Maarten should include stops in both capitals, Philipsburg and Marigot. Personally, I did not like Philipsburg so much, but still it's worth seeing. The main street is one shop after another--but mostly just jewelry and electronics. The nicest part is right there in Philipsburg at the beach. That is beautiful. There is a very nice promenade along the beach for walking, jogging, roller blading etc. There are a couple of great little restaurants with a nice view, a beach bar to have drinks, and beach chairs. Philipsburg is extremely crowded during the day because of the cruise ships, but if you come around 5 PM it's great. All of the cruise ship passengers are leaving and the beach promenade is wonderful. Leave a Comment

Maho Bay Beach by wadekorzan This beach is a great place to spend a couple of hours. It is quite unique to see the big planes landing as they come down right over the beach! When facing the sea, there will be a little outdoor bar where you can get something to drink and watch the waves and the planes. We met some locals there who told us exactly what time to be there to see the BIG planes come down---between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM usually, you'll have Contnental, Air France, KLM, etc. Later in the afternoon, they will all have landed and you'll have to go back. While waiting for the planes, we had a nice drink and the beach was beautiful so simply enjoyed ourselves watching unsuspecting people get caught in huge waves Leave a Comment

Footprints at Baie Longue by wadekorzan What a beautiful place! It is off the beaten path, towards the southwestern side of the island. It's an inceredibly long beach with big waves and perfect turqoise water. There were very few people here and it was just breathtaking. There are no more words to describe it. I couldn't help taking the photo of the footprints as the waves tried to capture and steal them away forever... Leave a Comment

View of the harbor from the line between by BruceDunning, 1 more photos The view on the top of the ridge that runs between French and Dutch side is fabulous. It is called Mount Williams Hill, and divides the two states. You can see a great deal of the isalnd from there. The Dutch harbor is laid out if full splendor. Orient Beach by wadekorzan Orient Beach really is a must see, though my photo does not reflect that. It is located on the northeaster side of the island, on the French side. It is THE beach for watersports activities and is probably also the most crowded beach. There is great swimming here, and you also have parasilaing, jet-skiing, and other watersports. There are alot of beach bars and restaurants, a few little shops... At the far eastern end of the beach is the nudist colony, which might be interesting if you feel like being "free". If you're staying on Sint Maarten, I'd definitely come and spend a day here. Leave a Comment
