A minibus van from behind by eenelfje Public transportaion is provided by private buses. These buses are usually minivans that carry between 9 and 14 passengers. There is no schedule and they stop anywhere somebody wants to get on or off! Fares are between U$1 and U$2 . The buses run on both the French and Dutch side. At night it may be difficult to find buses going to certain directions, especially towards the airport. Taxi Taxi services are provided by private individuals who are licensed by the government (Dutch and French sides). Just settle a price before you get in. Car Rentals There are many car rental places, mostly around the Juliana Airport. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Sarah on the top of the world by ATXtraveler We were only in port for 8 hours, and so we did not have alot of time to explore. We came into port via Carnival Cruise's Victory ship. Although we were not able to explore the island as much as I would have liked to, we did enjoy the ride there! The advantages of using this transportation is that you do not have to carry much, and you are always guarenteed a safe meal on the way! Leave a Comment

Just wait at your desired location bus stop by TheTravelSlut, 4 more photos Taxis are available island-wide but have no set meter rates so beware--but rates are fixed by the government for set journeys based on 2 passengers sharing. Rates go up 25% after 10 PM and 50% after midnight. Car hire companies average about USD $45 per day (not much change since 1989!). Caution, do no park in NO-PARKING AREAS though as your car WILL BE TOWED. Traffic is heavy at times but always slow and taxis & busses stop in the middle of the roads. Also, avoid the bridges at certain times as you WILL sit in traffic. Times can be listed at rental car companies. Bus schedules are difficult because there are no timetables and no clearly marked bus stops (look for signs that read BusHalte). Ask locals for help or stand by the roadside and hold your arm out. If you are on the bus and want to stop, just yell out "Stop" (pretty simple). Fares are usually less than $5 for short trip and busses run about every 20-30 minutes island-wide. Cruiseship pier taxis are available at the AC Wathey cruiseport area and all have set prices. In Dec. 2007 the set prices for one-way bus transportation to and from the cruise terminal included: Mullet Bay USD $16 Marigot $12 Dawn Beach $15 Orient Beach $18 Divi Little Bay $8 Water taxis from the pier to downtown were $5 for an all-day bracelet and children were free and ferries to the other islands have their own schedules so you will want to check at the time you are there. Don't forget your $30 USD airport departure tax for everyone!

Maxi Van ready to go by Waalewiener Renting this Maxi Van (including driver ) for $40 -50 US,for the day(depends on your deal making skills) is a good deal in my opinion, and with two couples even a better deal. If you get a good driver like we did , it will be a fun day. Willem was very good, not shy at all, he showed us a lot of stuff. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

They are mini vans with the destination on a placard in the front window. It costs $1.00 US for a short or medium distance, or $1.50 for when you get to the end destination. Pay when you get off. If you need change ask the driver mid trip! That's just the way it is done, but don't expect it, he might not make change for you. The drivers are multilingual and understand what you say and where you want to go. The main routes are from Mullet beach to Philisburg on the Dutch side. If you want to go to the French side you get the bus at Cole Bay KFC (half to pay another dollar) takes you to Marigot. If you want to go North from Marigot there is another bus for an additional dollar. It is all very easy and convenient. There is a bus from Marigot to Baie Rouge. The bus travelling east and south from Grand Case will pass close by to Oreint Beach. It is about a mile walk in. Be polite and say good morning/afternoon/evening to the other passengers as you enter as is custom there. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by eenelfje The best way to explore St. Maarten is to hire a car and just drive everywhere !! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Renting a car is by far the best way to get around. Just drive smart, you're not in the city or highway. YOU'RE ON VACATION, drive like it. You will see traffic, but you won't care because during the 10 minutes of traffic you'll encounter (at "rush hour"), you get to see all the things you would have otherwise missed. With a car you have access to the entire island, so you get to experience as much as you want. There is one main road that loops the island, so navigation is easy. Print a few maps anyways. I rented a car for the week for $150. Don't get anything fancy and become a target, that's just common sense. The roads can get very hilly and twisty, keep your eyes open. The locals drive like they own the place, cuz' they do. Respect them and they won't run you down. WATCH FOR SPEEDBUMPS. They pop up everywhere and sometimes don't have signs. BTW, the signs on the Dutch and French sides are different, learn both. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Inside the bus on the way to Saint Martin. by mgard27 You could take a taxi, or you could pay $1.50 and hop on a bus to the French side of the island--Saint Martin. It's a little hot and a bit of a bumpy ride, but what bus ride isn't? Leave a Comment Theme: Bus
