Unique Places in Departamento de Chinandega

On Saturday nights, excited and frenzied shouts rise from the hundred or so men gathered at the cock fighting arena of Carlos Fonseca, a small community of 718 people located in the municipalidad de El Viejo. Reaching this community is quite simple: in Chinandega, one can take a microbus to El viejo, there are hundreds of them, and nearly all locals can tell one where they can be found. From El Viejo there is a small "bus" that stops across from the central basillica (the large white church) at a dentist office. The bus trip will cost 5 cords (about 30 cents) and it leaves at 7am, 12 noon and 430 pm. The community is charming, extremely rural and very poor, but the people are truely welcoming.
