This colourful little restaurant away from the centre of town offers a 4-course menu for about 85 Cordobas ($6 US) from Tuesday to Friday only. It's special because it doubles as a cooking school for teenagers who may otherwise have no opportunities to acquire skills to help them find employment. The master chef is no other than Sergio, the breakfast cook at "Another Night in Paradise". (See Accommodation tips). The kids prepare and serve the food to the 25 or so guests who come every night. It's always full.
I had three meals at cafe Chavalos and I think my favourite items were the ceviche (raw marinated seafood) and the cream of mushroom soup. :-) It's not truly what would qualify as a "fancy" restaurant, but compared to standard Nicaragua fare (rice, french fries, chicken/beef/fish, and plantain), it's definitely gourmet! This looks like a little hole in the wall (blink and you miss it) but it really expands inside. A good place to try if you're vegetarian, or just looking for a change. They have about 12 different choice of vegetable dishes (including a nice coconut curied one). They also have chicken. Quiet place with good service.
My favourite were the Asian-inspired veggie dishes and the ones with eggplant. Good chicken too. This is a small boutique hotel but they also have a restaurant in the courtyard, we had some really nice sandwiches and enjoyed the cooling fan above. Even though it is a Spanish colonial building the decor is Indonesian and it looks fantastic, the bar is lovely at night, very stylish. It looks very smart but a Cubra Libre is only C$15, just under a dollar. I had excellent Chicken Satay for dinner. Excellent food, Spanish cuisine with tables set around a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and candles. It is fairly expensive but worth a visit, I had garlic prawns and they were excellent. It has a very romantic ambience and the decor is stunning. The pizzas are very good and come in either thin or thick base. We ate and drank well for just USD10 for the three of us. They also have special ice-creams for desert. The tables are laid out around an open courtyard and is brightly decorated. It is always packed full of Nicaraguan families and is good value for money. The address has changed from the one in the latest lonely planet, it is now on Calle la Libertad (east of parc central) NOT Calle El Caimito. They will also deliver to your hostel. My favourite pizza place in Granada. It has a nice cozy atmosphere and the pizzas are baked in proper pizza ovens. Leave a Comment Theme: PizzaPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: Calle La Calzada

I had breakfast three times at Kathy's Waffle House during my stay in Granada. Not because I'd have thought their breakfast would have been so much better than elsewhere in the city but because the service was so excellent. In fact if the service wouldn't have been so good I would have left on the last morning because of the level of the discussion between the owner (American expat) and some American guests. The way they talked about women, especially local ones, was disgusting. What drew me there too was that I could sit outdoors in the patio under the fans.
I had what is my favourite breakfast in hot countries everywhere - fruit salad - twice and once Belgian waffles, which seemed to be very popular. I just love cold fruit salad in hot climate. Some natural yoghurt, lots of exotic fresh fruit and a little bit of muesli on the top. What could beat that? The first time I tried it was in South American and ever since I've loved it. I've made it at home but it just doesn't taste the same, so I think it is the climate which makes the trick! Wafflers were ok but far too heavy to have first thing in the morning I think. With breakfast you get coffee free and it was excellent too. I also had to have a smoothie - in water - or the breakfast wouldn't have been perfect. If you are in Masaya area, Restaurant Bucaneros, in Nindiri a small town few miles off Masaya, is a very valuable choice for a meal in a beautiful setting. The restaurant, an informal place yet top-end for the local standard, serves local plates as well as international salads and sandwiches. The setting is spectacular, on a terrace overlooking Laguna Masaya (See the photo attached). Any taxi driver in Masaya can take you there. The Restaurant of the hotel/guesthouse Casa San Francisco was my favorite choice for fine dining in Granada. The cuisine is Latin-fusion with dishes from the local tradition as well as Mexican classic, Italian and Asian plates with a good choice of meats, seafood, veggies and pasta. The menu is extensive and attractive, the food is well prepared, presented and served; finally the price is reasonable. The bartender prepares good drinks from Latin America traditions including the national "Nica Libre" made with local white rum and Sprite. I did not check the wine list. The restaurant has a dining room, where also the bar and the Hotel reception desk are located, and a much more attractive inner patio with only few tables, therefore, if interested, having a reserved for you in the patio is a good idea. If you are looking for quality and somewhat sophisticated food in a cozy and pretty environment, Casa San Francisco is a high valuable choice. Very popular with tourists and Nicas. You may have to wait for a table in the lounge in the back as they get very busy
They have waffles (obviously! - pecan and bluberry), cooked breakfast, pancakes, bagels, omelets, gallo pinto (rice and beans), just about anything you could want. The coffee is also very good. We paid C$150 (less than $10) for three of us. At 11am they were still going strong so I am not sure what time they are open till.
