 | Granada Things To Do | Tips 21 - 30 of 108 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (108) This is a great day or half-day activity. Hostel Oasis has a partner hostel called Craterside that charges $10 a night to stay and also includes transportion and use of the dock, tubes, kayaks etc. You can pay $5 to spend the day there and the transportation is $1.50 each way, leaving Hostel Oasis at 10 am and returning from the laguna at 4:30. Transportation for night visitors also leaves Granada at 4 pm. You can also take a private taxi to get there if you miss the transport (book day before as it fills up) and should not cost more than 150 cordobas for 3 people. The Laguna is an inverted volcanic crater and the water is fresh and sulphuric, the lake-bottom, a soft, black volcanic sand. They have gone as far down as 200 metres and don't know how deep the crater is! Our taxi driver advised us that this is an enchanted laguna and that drownings are common- this is probably due to the fact that many Nicas do not swim very well but if you believe in those things, stay close to shore! The hostel is a nice, basic place but SUPER mellow- not much to do around here! Leave a Comment

It seems like around every corner there is something new to see. Some buildings are in disrepair, but you can vision what they must of been like in their glory days. I think the future maybe bright for Granada, so hopefully more buildings will be restored. Leave a Comment

We decide to go down to the Mercado (market) to really see Nicaraguan life. It is just down the road from the hostel Oasis and you can definitely hear it before you get there, there are enormous speakers on the road belting out loud music. Kind of makes you want to do the dance walk! We then went into the market. At first the stalls were mainly selling rice, beans and grains from huge Hessian sacks and then we got to the fruit and vegetable section which is nice and brightly coloured. Leave a Comment

A trip to Mombacho is well worth it, even if the Volcanoe itself is less impressive than others. There is an intersting vent hole. A tunnel through the rock. A stop on the way up where they pour an awsome cup of coffee and stunning vies of the Isletas and Granada. The zip lines at the canopy tour, part way up are also a funplace to spend some time. Leave a Comment Directions: Take bus to Rivas from Granada (1/2 block from SHell Station near the Granada market) get off at the road to the park. Walk 1.5 km to park entrance pay 150 cordobas and get in the back of the truck on the next group up.

We did this activity as part of a day-long tour of Masaya and the Pueblos Blancos with JB Fun Tours on the Central Park. The National Park features the Masaya volcano and crater, trails to hike up to several view points to see Masaya Laguna, other volcanic craters, views of Mombotombo Volcano, Mombotombito, Manauga and the Gates of Hell. There are hundreds of tiny islands in Lago Cocibolca (Lake Nicaragua) and you can explore them via boat or kayak. If you love to kayak or LOVE birds, then this is a good option for you. Make sure to go very early (6 am) to be able to see the wildlife and avoid boat traffic in the isletas. You should have some kayaking or canoeing experience so you don't hold the group up. We went with Mombo Tours which charges $25 for a 2.5 hour trip. It was nice but I am not that interested in birds that I would do it again. But on a nice day, it is very pretty and relaxing: a different view of Nicaragua! Leave a Comment

If you only do one thing in Granada - take a boat tour of the islands of Lake Nicaragua. The islands were created years ago when a volcano erupted and the lava rock created the islands, approximately 1300. People own entire islands and their funky houses are so cool to check out. Monkeys have fun in the trees on the islands. FYI: This is the only lake in the world with sharks in it! Best to organize a boat ride from a hostel or just go to beach and barter with a local boat captain. That is what we did and we managed to get a fabulous deal--$20US for 2hours for 2 people. A father and his son took us out on their boat and we toured the many islands of Lake Nicaragua that were created by the eruption of a volcano approximately 700 hundred years ago. Beautiful!!! This is the real Masaya experience- the market is labyrinth-like, hot and busy but is waaaay more authentic than the very expensive and touristy Old Market. Skip out the section with raw meat and food (ugh, stomach is getting weak) and go straight to the Artensania section where you will find lots of paintings, typical wares, ceramics and more. Do watch your bags but it felt otherwise quite safe and the people were friendly. A medium sized painting: 100 cordobas, typical Nica leather sandals: 60 cordobas. Pack of small 3 rums: 90 cordobas. In the old market, they were asking 600 cordobas for the same painting: awful! Take the bus from Granada to Masaya: 9 cordobas and about 45 minutes. Leaves every 20 minutes, might end up standing. From the bus terminal, you are looking right at the market. Leave a Comment Address: Next to Masaya bus terminal

I enjoyed just walking around the city, seeing all the colonial architecture. The inner courtyards of the buildings are very tranquil and relaxing. To me Granada definetly is not a place to come for nightlife. It is a place to come and drink coffee, think, reflect and read. I hope you enjoy the rest of the photos of street scenes, attached with this tip. Leave a Comment
