 | Granada Things To Do | Tips 31 - 40 of 108 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (108) This is a small fort located up on a hill near Masaya. A taxi from the Mercado central for 4 people, return was 100 cordobas. The taxi driver kindly waited for us to do our 20 minute lookabout and tour and then took us back. I felt like this was a lot safer. The fort is managed by a group of young Nica boy scouts who for 10 cordobas per person will take you on a historic tour of the underground tunnels that served as a prison for political prisoners. It was very interesting but we were also very scared since we were the only tourists there and thought we could be robbed or worse very easily. In any case, nothing happened but it gave us a good scare. From the fort you get beautiful views of neighbouring lagunas, volcanos and Masaya town. Leave a Comment

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the world, it’s hard to really see it in a place like Granada but when you see kids spending their days selling cashew nuts, pottery, pirate DVDs etc instead of being in school it brings it home. So when a kid shouts out ‘Hey gringo one dollar’, give it to him, what’s it to you? Leave a Comment

On one of the islands we saw some monkeys and one with a baby clinging to it which was fantastic. They are used to tourists so they come down to get a look at you. Leave a Comment

Calle Calzada is a beautiful street with all the houses and buildings painted in different colours, it leads down to Lake Nicaragua from Parc Central. There are so many beautiful streets to walk along, the city is beautiful. Calle Calzada has many hostels, restaurants and tour companies and is close to Parc Central. I still recommend you stay at Hostal Oasis though (see my hotel tip). Even though we felt very comfortable about walking around town there was a notice on the door of the hostal telling people to get taxis at night. We often walked back just after dark and had no problems at all. Just don’t carry a daypack or flash money around and rather leave your passport locked in the hostel. Leave a Comment

Volcano Mombacho lies just outside town. Well, not that close. Take the bus from the main station (the other side of the food market) and head for Nandaime or Rivas and ask to get off at the Volcano. You will then walk a kilometer up to the park office, where you pay your money and catch a ride up on the truck that leaves three times a day. Call the Biological Center for exact times. At the top you will take a magnificent hike with incredible views of the countryside and the volcano. Very educational, too. Leave a Comment Phone: 552-5858
