I camped with some friends at La Flor nature preserve near San Juan del Sur. We took the chicken bus from the center of San Juan, which took about an hour. We then walked into the park and were greeted by the park ranger.
It costs Cord$300 per tent, so we packed 3 people into a 2 person tent and had 1 person sleep in a hammock, that way the cost was divided among many. There is also a fee of Cord$150 to enter the park. If you take the organized trip from Casa Oro, it will cost US$22 and they will take you to the park for a few hours and then back to the hostel. Depending on how many people you can split the cost with, this may be a better choice.
Theft is rampant, as the locale is on the beach and anyone can simply walk to your tent. There is no concern of violent crime, but if you leave your bag out while you are visiting the turtles, I unfortunately wouldn't really expect it to be there when you return.
Nicaragua is not quite as developed in terms of eco tourism, and they allow people to take pictures and use flashlights to see the little turtles. It is a personal responsibility to be respectful to the turtles and let them make the most important journey of their little lives without the shock of flashes and artificial light. Don't get me wrong, I took a couple of pictures, but not as many as I wanted to! Leave a Comment
