Lake Nicaragua is so big it looks like a sea and with the swells to go with it. It is the only lake in the world where you will find fresh water sharks. It takes about 14 hours by ferry to travel from Granada to El Castillo in the south, it gives you an idea of the enormity of the lake. Leave a Comment

Plaza de la Independencia is situated at the north east corner of Parque Central, there is an obelisk there dedicated to the heroes of the 1811 struggle for independence. It is worth going into Casa de los Leones to see the art exhibitions. Leave a Comment

Several times I visited this place, alone or with my family. Hotel Oasis or Bearded Monkey in Granada offer shuttle to their places at the Lagoon. I always went with Bearded Monkey to their Monkey Hut. You pay 6 $ for the entrance for one day and you can use their kayaks, inner tubes, hammocks, bathrooms and kitchen. They sell soft drinks and beer, but you have to bring your own food. There are also some beds in dorms and a cabin to rent. Shuttle from Granada is 2 $ one way. It leaves Bearded Monkey at 10.30 and Monkey Hut at 17.00.

Some guidebooks include among their recommended sights the Old Railway Station or, in local language, the "Antigua Estacion de Ferrocarril". The station, in the photo attached, is of no interest whatsoever as well as hard to get to, being located many blocks North of the City Center, and definitely not worth the time ands the efforts to get there. It is on the way from/to Managua Airport or Masaya yet; if you are keen to visit it and your traveling by taxi, you may ask your taxi driver to stop by on the way to or from Masaya or the airport.

Soon your olfactory senses are assaulted by the stench of unrefrigerated meat. I love my meat but it does smell awful and looks even worse with entrails spilling over the tables. The fish section looks better but smells much worse. Despite the smells I love observing the people going about their daily business. I saw a woman who must have been at least 90 if not 100 with a huge toothless smile packing small fish into a bag. Leave a Comment
