The Rubén Darío National Theater is one of the few buildings in the Area Monumental that survived the devastating earthquake of 1972. It was named in honor of Nicaragua's most renowned poets, Rubén Darío, whose likeness can be seen on the 100-cordoba note. The theater sits beside Plaza de la Fe and overlooks Lake Managua. Behind the theater are the Old Cathedral, the National Palace and other important Managua landmarks. The Nicaraguan National Theater is a leading venue for cultural life in Managua, including music, theater and the visual arts. Leave a Comment

Nueva Catedral, Managua's New Cathedral, was built after the Old Cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1972. The unusual modern architecture of the New Cathedral features 63 domes, one for each of the churches in the Managua diocese. The domes are also said to add structural support in the event of another earthquake. In my mind, this Cathedral is not nearly as beautiful or majestic as the one it replaced. Still it is attractive and functional, with a colorful postmodern interior and a shrine on the northwest side. The New Cathedral is located just south of Loma de Tiscapa, along the road to the Rotonda Ruben Dario. There is a small gift shop beside the Cathedral. Leave a Comment

Plaza de la Fe Pope John Paul II, or "Plaza to the Faith of Pope John Paul II," is a large open area near the shore of Lago de Managua and the Area Monumental. A tall obelisk in the center of the square marks the spot where Pope John Paul II held a mass for the people of Nicaragua, who are predominately Roman Catholic. The day was declared a natiohnal holiday and free transportation was offered to all who wanted to attend the mass. The monument has four plaques, one on each side, which commemorate the Pope's pastoral visit to Managua in 1983, during the Contra War. It is estimated that 36% of the population of Nicaragua saw the Pope during his historic visit. Leave a Comment

Casa Presidential, Managua, Nicaragua by Stephen-KarenConn Standing in the Plaza de la Republica, beside the old Cathedral Santiago and facing the National Palace/Museum, is Casa Presidential. It is the office of the President of Nicaragua. This is not an attraction which visitors can tour, but it can be viewed from the outside. At the time of my visit, and of writing this tip, the President of Nicaragua is Daniel Ortega, who gained fame and notoriety as a leader in the Sandinista National Liberation Front. Learn more about him by clicking the link below. Although Managua is the capital of Nicaragua, there is no national capitol building such as that found in Washington, DC. This Presidential House, and a few other government buildings are scattered in various parts of the city. Leave a Comment

Across from the Old Managua Cathedral, and facing the National Palace is the Museo Nacional or National Museum. I found this to be a very impressive building, set around two leafy courtyards. Inside you will find numerous artifacts and displays which tell the story of Nicaragua from pre-historic times to present as well as a display of contemporary Nicaraguan art. I most enjoyed grand staircase and the beautiful and well-planted courtyards which the two wings of the building surround - see hidden photos. Admission: US$2 Hours: Mon - Fri: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sat - Sun: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Leave a Comment

One of the most intriguing things you can sea in Managua is the ancient footprints, Huellas de Acahualinca. Estimated to be between 6000 and 7000 years old, these human footprints were discovered in 1874. They were uncovered by quarrying workmen and were buried more than 12 feet deep under compacted volcanic material. The footprints, made by 12 individuals (men, women and children) all lead in one direction, toward the lake. Scientist theorize that the footprints may represent a migration rather than a routine fishing or hunting trip because there are no returning footprints. Of course, the people who made the tracks may have just found a way back that avoided the mud. Tracks of deer and mapache (a type of raccoon, are also present. There is a small but interesting museum on site. I followed advice given me and took a taxi to Huellas de Achualinca because the area surrounding it is not particularly safe for tourists. Admission is US$2 and there is a small additional fee if you want to take photographs. Hours: Mon. - Fri: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Saturday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Leave a Comment

Due to budget cuts Managua's museums are housed under one roof-the Palacio Nacional. The first floor has the Hall of Natural History (information about Nicaragua's national parks and natural history). There is a small art gallery also on the first floor that has displays of local artists and collections of pre-Columbian pottery. The second floor contains the National Library and National Archives (you will find much of Ruben Dario's work here). The tour is offered in Spanish and English with a guide for 30C. Open M-F 8am-5pm. Not sure of hours on the weekend, but we did go there on a saturday. Leave a Comment Address: South side of the Plaza de la DemocraciaPhone: 222 2905

This was Nicaragua's first national park (declared in 1979). You can see great views of Volcan Masaya and Volcan Nindiri. Before heading to the craters, stop by the museum and visitors center(nothing too impressive, but it will give you a little background info.) Make sure when you make it to the lookout point that you park with your car facing away from the crater. Apparently, this is the rule ever since Masaya had a hiccup not too long ago and volcanic rocks were spitting up onto the tourists and cars. They want you to be facing out, so you can jump in your car and get away as quickly as possible! I was told some of the hiking trails which used to take you up to a higher viewing point are closed for the same reason. Leave a Comment Directions: The entrance to the park is 7km northwest of Masaya on the highway to Managua. Supposedly you can take a public bus from either Managua or Masaya, but then there is no public transportation to the crater. You can also take a taxi from Masaya.

Head to an area called Catarina. You will hit a market area first and then a few bars and restaurants. If you keep walking behind the restaurants you will have a breathtaking view of Laguna de Apoyo, which is the largest crater lagoon in Nicaragua. While you are there you have to go horsebackriding in front of the lagoon. We paid the equivalent of $5 for the four of us to ride for approx. 30 minutes. We had several guides escorting us along the trail so you don't need to be afraid of the horses heading off the edge into the lagoon!! You can ride for as long as you want to- the price varies accordingly. Leave a Comment Address: Near the town of Masaya
