I had been walking around in Masaya for quite a while when I started to get hungry. I was on my way back to Parque 17 de Octubre when I passed Cafetin Elzabad. It is a small eatery open for lunch and dinner (it is closed a few hours between). I had rice with chicken for 50 cordobas and a Pepsi for 10 cordobas (July 2009). The meal tasted good but it could have been served with better bread (tortilla would have been better).
Other quick meals you can have here are hamburgers, gallo pinto, hot dogs, meat and chicken dishes.
This local restaurant is open in the afternoons is across from Parque Central and Catherdral next to La Ronda Bar( which has a good crowd in evenings and serves food also) just a few blocks from Old Market, the place is packed with locals at lunch. Meals are cafeteria style get in line and place your order the earlier you get there the better for selection, freshness and crowds.
Meals consist of rice, beans,or mashed potatoes, choice of meat, chicken or fish and vegetables, sometimes pastas, the meals run about 40 to 45 cords and with a drink jugos 8c and refrecos nuturals 6c,I enjoyed a nice glass of Jaimaica usually with my meal. The meals at the Old Market are better, but for half the price about 54c this makes for a fulling economical lunch sitting with locals
Favorite Dish: My favorite dish would be Medallones en salsa, basicaly a pot roast in gravy the portions aren't giant but its more tender than than the bistecks, which tend to be tough in Nicaragua, the chuleta de pollo is good, the fish sometimes dry,Canelones Rellenos are good and stuffed with a manicota cheese, give it a try.I did not have the SHOP SUEY though
