When you are on Isla de Ometepe, it doesn't really matter where you are going to, or what you are visiting. The island has such an incredible natural beauty that you don't need to look for a spectacular piece of nature to enjoy. No matter how you are travelling: on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus: you'll always see the beauty of "The Island".
For example: when we made a trip by mountainbike towards the Ojo de Agua, we rode through some absolutely amazing parts of the island. At one moment you are completely surrounded by the most powerful green colour I've ever seen; some padifields. One moment later you have a great view of the mightly Volcán de Conceptión that created and dominates the northern part of the island. And just a few minutes later you look out over the Lago de Nicaragua with some more green hills on the foreground.
And also looking for details can be very rewarding on Ometepe: one minute you are surrounded by the most colourful flowers in trees and bushes, and the other minute you have yellow and white butterflies flying all around you.
Once agan the conclusion is: Isla de Ometepe is just one big natural paradise where you don't need a big attraction to enjoy the destination to the max!

For those with extra stamina, you can hire a guide to take you up this volcanoe. Unlike Volcan madera, this one is mostly baren at top. I didn't climb it myself since the view was obstructed by clouds.

This is an interestin trek taking. You take about 3.5 hours to reach the crater of the Volcano, where a lagoon resides. All in all it must have been a 6-hour hike through a grueling, wet, and muddy path. It was amazing though. We even saw a Congo howling monkey on our way down.

The twin-peaked Isla de Ometepe (Nahuatl for 'two hills'), the largest island in the world found in a freshwater lake, rises out of Lago de Nicaragua. In fact, Ometepe used to be two islands before......

Despite the awful boat trip we had getting to the island it is still worth the visit. The island is like nothing else I have seen before and is a great place to put you feet up and relax.

I travelled to Ometepe during a mission trip, but I still was able to find time for more "touristy" excursions.
