Climb Volcan Maderas or Concepcion. I climbed Maderas which is a non-active volcano and has a lake on top of it. The climb was great and also challenging as there are no switchbacks just straight up. Make sure to buy rubber boots in Rivas before you head out to the Isla de Ometepe. You will save a pair of hiking boots! Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer Please see my travelogue on my Nicaragua page to read about the boat trip from hell!!! No matter what, wait for the car ferry and don’t get on the small boats, even if it looks calm it won’t be when you are half way across and then it’s too late! Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer A Californian and a British tourist went missing on one of the volcanoes a few weeks ago so now all tourists have to show their passports on arrival so they can keep a list of all tourists on the island. The LP says that even experienced hikers should take a local guide. Leave a Comment

At an half on hour bicycle trip from Altagracia, you find the beautiful swimming hole "Ojo de Agua". This "Eye of Water" can be reached by following the main (paved) road southwards from the town, and then take the dirtroad to the left in the direction of Santo Domingo. Close to the resort "Villa Paraiso" there is a even smaller dirtroad of a few hundred metres to the right and then you'll end up at the Ojo. There also goes a bus in this direction, but it only goes once an hour or even less, so be prepared to wait long. When you arrive at the Ojo de Agua, you'll be awaiting by one of the friendly people who run the place here. You need to pay a small entrance fee which was less then a dollar, and then you're in. The hole is actually a natural cool spring of which the water is captured in the concrete bassin that is made here. It is clear that it is a natural one, because all the time you see little bubbles coming up from the earth. This is the direct connection the pool has with the volcano above you. Swimming in the pool is very refreshing (the water is pretty cold) even though it can be a little dirty; there are lots of leafs and seeds in the water. There also are small seats around the water and even some hammocks to relax in. And when you are thirsty or hungry: everything can be bought in the small bar close to the pool. And everything is cheap too! We had a very nice tortilla, two drinks and a plate of chips for only 3 dollars. But: the best thing at the Ojo de Agua is the stunning environment you are in here. The nature is overwhelming and all around you, you see insects, birds (like parrots and hummingbirds) and other animals. A short walk around the water, and you'll be surprised about what you can spot here! Leave a Comment Address: Ojo de Agua, Santo Domingo, Isla de Ometepe

by paradisedreamer Due the fact that it is a volcanic beach the sand is black volcanic sand and ash. It can get quite windy so if you had ideas of lazing on the beach this isn’t really the place for it. Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer There are two volcanoes, Concepcion in the north and Maderas in the south. Concepcion is a perfect cone shaped volcano with amazing lava flows. Leave a Comment

A Maya-temple in the Central Park of Altagracia by Pieter11, 2 more photos Altagracia in the north of Isla de Ometepe is the second largest town on the island, and also the second most important one. It is a good base to explore the island from, and it is a very peacedul little place. The centre of Altagracia is the Parque Central. This park is nothing more then a big lawn with a small shop where you can buy something to eat or drink, a small playing garden (with an interesting "Maya"-temple as one of the masterpieces, and some tall trees. Around this park, most of the life takes place. It is here that you will find most of the shop, here you can see the children going to school and going back home in the afternoon, and this is where you can catch the bus to other destinations on the island. Further outside of the town, you soon enter the real rural life of Isla de Ometepe: the houses become small farms where the pigs, the chicken and the cows walk around freely, and where the nature soon becomes the mainattraction. Cowboys riding their horses, children playing in the fresh mud, and the most colourful flowers cheering up the dark green roadsides. And just northwest from Altagracia you'll find Puerto de Gracia, where the boats departs to Granada and San Carlos twice a week. For more info about this connection, check out my transportation tip. by paradisedreamer A rope was thrown to them and they managed to drag the men and the boat onto the lowered car deck. There were big white smiles all round! Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer Horse riding was about $5 an hour. A guide will go with you and you get to gallop along the beach and the views are brilliant. Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer Laundries are a little different in this part of the world. Here there are wash boards in the lake and women stand here and do the laundry by hand. Leave a Comment
