Ometepe Island is a beautiful place and most people are trustworthy and very helpful. However, there have been many cases of theft involving the taxi drivers and the owners of Asi Es Mi Tierra in Balgue at the foot of the Maderas Volcano.
Many cameras, cell phones, money, and even computers have gone missing from luggage or from rooms there. So if you use the services keep your valuables close to you at all times. There are also rumours of drug dealing such as crack.

Take care with the Ferries schedules because they may change without notice, i was supposed to get back in the 3.00pm ferry and someone told me, the ferry is leaving at 2,30pm (the last is at 4,00pm) so i had to run to the small port to cath the boat.

Dangerous hiking!

Right before I got to Ometepe, two young men attempted to hike the volcano alone and ended up missing. They were just found dead.

The hiking is no joke - there are serious dangers in the jungle and a guide is required in order to ensure your safety. They also earn money from your trips and can show you things you may not see on your own.
