Corn Island Warnings Or Dangers

My wife and I were robbed at knife point on Little Corn Island in June 2011. We were going back to our hotel (Little Corn Beach Bungalow) on the eastern side of the island from Tranquilo's Cafe on the western side. The attack occurred at 2300, on the mid-island path path that start's off from Bridgett's cafe and heads east. Right when you pass the final casita and begin entering jungle a man (all covered up in a jumpsuit with mask) popped out of no where with a knife and demanded money. We gave it to him. We were traveling together with a flashlight. ALL the paths going from one side of the island to the other are unlit, dark, like no ambient light dark, jungle so you are sort of screwed lighting wise.

I recommend using the southern path (one heading to Casa Iguana) and then traveling north on the eastern beach, which apparently is more frequented (found out after the fact) and safer. Use common sense - Travel in a group after dark, do not be complacent in thinking about security, ask your hotel for an escort, plan ahead anytime you are going to stay out. Also, when you get on the island ask about the latest robberies because apparently 30 days prior a robbery occurred at the exact same spot yet we received no warning it.

Be careful, don't let the island lull your senses because we thought "Oh, nothing could happen here on this small island paradise" -I was much more alert in Managua- and then it did. A big downer on an otherwise awesome trip.

Stay safe!!! On the plus side, everyone in the island showed great concern, the police came over from Big Corn Island, etc...so I am thankful for that. Other than that, everything else on the trip on LCI was awesome and I would definitely come back and recommend it to people - just keep your wits about you.
