Casa Vivaldi: Casa Vivaldi

by thelukey

The Casa Vivaldi (not pictured), a charmingly elegant Italian restaurant located along the main strip that leads from Granada’s central park towards the shore of the Lago de Nicaragua, closes out the list of my three favorite eateries in Nicaragua.

El Buen Pollo: The Good Chicken

by thelukey

Chinandega doesn’t really have much in the way of tourist attractions, but it is home to three attractive, brightly painted churches, including this unique blue one. Better yet, Chinandega is also home to the “El Buen Pollo,” a fritanga (outdoor grill) that serves up the best grilled chicken I’ve ever eaten, plus some pretty darn good chorizos and a fair variety of side dishes. Best of all, a full feast won’t set you back more than about $2.50.

Asia Latina: In Granada, the name says it all...

by jglsongs

The corner Thai/Latin restaurant (which is much bigger on the inside than it looks like on the outside) wears a few hats- good restaurant, neighborhood-y hangout and the center/start of any type of Granada nightlife, and it also feels like you're in someone's home - especially the bathroom sinks (very interesting). The prices are very good, lots of choices and close to everything. Also, GLBT-owned and one of the few GLBT-friendly places in Granada. One thing- be careful when you ask for something to be spicier- if you don't specify how spicy, you'll be tearing up for the whole meal.

and all Nicaraguan: El Colibri: Spanish/Catalan/Italian/British/Irish-owned...

by jglsongs

El Colibri is one of those places that people might just call "Mary's place" or "that place just left outside of Pelican Eyes..." Whatever it's called, it's a fun, local place that seems to be the ex-pat center of SJdS. The paella is a house specialty (since two of the owners, a couple, are from Girona, Spain). After a little while, you'll feel like you're at home, and you'll start to be treated like family.

La Cascada (at Piedras y Olas): the only gourmet restaurant in San Juan del Sur

by jglsongs

How can you get any better than a gourmet restaurant, staffed by people who are attentive and are always there to refill a glass that sits at the foot of a pool that overlooks the ocean- and no walls, just a big thatched roof. Well, in San Juan del Sur - you can't. La Cascada is the official name, but people just refer to it as Piedras y Olas or Pelican Eyes. My personal favorites: Lobster and corn fritters, cantaloupe granita, hot artichoke dip with homemade tortilla chips which taste/look/crunch better than any you've ever had, and the mahi mahi.

The chickenlady!: Good and cheap local food!

by JenniferG

This is an amazing place to have dinner! While you sit down on the sidewalk you pick the thing you want: chicken or beef, order a freshly made lemonade and watch your meat grilled on the barbecue. This is not a place tourists often go to. It probably doesn't look very reliable but trust me this is the way locals go out for dinner. It's good and cheap and a unique experience. And we didn't got sick from it at all!

Road side Comidas: Great food - Cheap

by Hermanater

Every where there are small roadside comidas. These places are litte buildings on the side of the road. We ate at a few of them. The food was fresh and plentiful. Steak, beef, three types of chicken, soup, queso frito...........3 of us ate, with a drink each for about $8 all of it

Ricardo's: Great food - great view

by Hermanater

This is a bar - restaurant on the beach at San Juan del Sur. It was a tidy place with friendly staff and good food.I say this even though while eating one mouthfull tasted funny and I was very ill the next day. The other 3 people I was with really enjoyed their meals. Even though I was sick, I would not hesitate to go back.

The Jungle: Bananos Galore

by epicult

The jungle serves up some very tasty treats on this island. Try some of the fresh bananas, coconuts or limes from along the jungle trail or beach. It's common to see fruit harvesters riding through the trails or along the beach with their horses loaded to max. If you choose to endulge in nature's offerings, be sure you're not actually pilfering from someone's garden.

National dish - Nacatamales

by hanula

Nacatamales is the most typical Nicaraguan food. It is smashed corn and potatoes wrapped in a banana leaf along with some pork meat, little fresh tomato and some garlic & salt. The leaf is tightly wrapped and tied with a string and the whole thing is boiled in water. It is tasty when fresh, very cheap and has lots of oil in it.
