Climbing Cerro Negro Volcano near Leon

by maryellen50

Central America's youngest volcano, Cerro Negro, is one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Although Cerro Negro lies in a relatively unpopulated area, its occasional heavy ashfalls have caused damage to crops and buildings in nearby regions. I used QuetzalTrekkers which is staffed entirely by volunteer guides (see website).

Las Isletas

by Varinia

Las IsletasLas Isletas is a group of 356 small islands just offshore from Granada in Lago de Nicaragua. Great place to visit, locals make a living out of fishing and growing tropical fruits such as mangoes and coconuts, and there is variety of birds. The island of San Pablo has a small fortress built by the Spaniards to protect against British pirates in the 18th century. Isla Zapatera is protected as a national park and is one of Nicaragua's most important archaeological areas. Giant stone statues erected by Indians in pre-Columbian times have been moved elsewhere, but you can visit other ancient tombs and structures. There are more tombs and some interesting rock carvings on Isla del Muerto (Island of the Dead).

Masaya's Volcano:boiling and raising magma

by Varinia

Masaya Volcano National Park, one of Nicaragua's most interesting and beautiful natural phenomena. It is the country's first national park, it comprises an area of 54 km2 with more than 20 km of scenic roads and trails, leading to and around the two impressive volcanos and five formidable craters. The Masaya Volcano, also known as POPOGATEPE meaning the "MOUNTAIN THAT BURNS" in the language of the indigenous Chorotega tribe One of its craters, Santiago, currently displays gaseous activity and incadescent lava in its interior.

Corn Island(Atlantic coast)

by Varinia

Corn Islands is a very different place in compare to the pacific coast, less developed and full of natural resources. Seafood is great and inexpensive.Shopping: A great place for black and red coral jewelry, prices are unbelievable! The Corn Islands (Islas de Maiz) are made up of two islands. Like other islands near the Caribbean Coast, the Corn Islands were once a haven for buccaneers in other words for pirates. Nowadays, the islands (especially the larger one) are popular holiday spots, with white sandy beaches, excellent fishing, great for diving and an relaxed pace of life. I heard that an Italian company is planning to invest US$30 million in Little Corn Island. Those interested in enjoying the island's remoteness will want to visit soon, before it starts getting built up. In Little Corn Island you can have a lobster for lunch just for $5.00, this was 3 years ago, nowdays still...

San Juan del Sur

by thelukey

There’s not much else to do in this small, much-visited beach town besides frequent trips between the water and your restaurant/bar of choice, but there doesn’t really need to be. Surfers tend to flock here and use the town as a base for trips to harder-to-reach surfing beaches nearby.Tip within a tip: the meal my wife and I ate at the beachfront Restaurante Doña Inés was one of the three best meals I had during my various trips to Nicaragua.

Isle de Ometepe

by thelukey

Nicaragua’s Isla de Ometepe (supposedly the largest island in the world to be found within a body of fresh water) is one of those exceedingly mellow destinations where you easily end up staying twice as long as you’d intended. Go for a swim, climb one of the volcanoes, hunt for petroglyphs, or just lie on the beach and enjoy being literally cut off from the rest of the world.

Northwestern Nicaragua

by thelukey

The northwestern corner of Nicaragua is said to be a great venue for hikers and climbers. Unfortunately, I never took the time to explore anything beyond Chinandega, though I did manage to get this photo of Volcán San Cristóbal from the window of a moving bus during a trip between Chinandega and the Honduran border.

Baseball For Everyone

by thelukey

As is case with soccer in the rest of Central America, just about every community in Nicaragua, no matter how small, has some type of baseball diamond and a local nine that entertains the crowds on the weekends. You can safely bet that there won’t be any MLB scouts in the stands at community games like the one pictured (in the town of San Ramón, department of Matagalpa), where the joy of taking an afternoon’s escape from the fairly difficult life that many Nicaraguans face often exceeds the importance of winning percentages, batting averages, and ERAs.

Play Ball!

by thelukey

While most baseball fanatics seem to know this already, many other visitors to Nicaragua are surprised to learn that baseball – not soccer – is the national pastime here. Nicaragua’s professional league – which is said to approximate AA-level baseball in the US – plays its games during the dry season (logically enough). If you’re in the country while the season’s going on, and if you have even a nominal interest in baseball, you should definitely make your way to a game. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the level of play and (more so) by the fans’ enthusiasm. Ticket prices start as low as $0.80, and don’t usually run up any higher than about $8 (though I did pay a scalper $11.65 each for two seats in the first row behind home plate for Game 5 of the National Championship Series between Chinandega and San Fernando during my last visit to Nicaragua).
