Guasaule Border Crossing
Having lived in El Salvador for nearly five years, I eventually became something of an expert regarding Central American border crossings (passing through them 31 times in all). None are particularly pleasant – is bureaucracy ever pleasant? – and, in fact, the process of crossing the Nicaragua-Honduras border at Guasaule is more of a hassle than many other border-crossings are due to the omnipresent heat and dust, the hordes of tricycle operators aggressively offering their “help,” the ambiguous nature of the fees charged by immigration officials on both sides of the border, and the long walks that separate the transportation “terminals” from the immigration offices. That said, the view from the bridge that unites the two countries is, in my opinion, the prettiest “Welcome to ...” view that you’re likely to find in Central America.
