Guasaule Border Crossing

by thelukey

Having lived in El Salvador for nearly five years, I eventually became something of an expert regarding Central American border crossings (passing through them 31 times in all). None are particularly pleasant – is bureaucracy ever pleasant? – and, in fact, the process of crossing the Nicaragua-Honduras border at Guasaule is more of a hassle than many other border-crossings are due to the omnipresent heat and dust, the hordes of tricycle operators aggressively offering their “help,” the ambiguous nature of the fees charged by immigration officials on both sides of the border, and the long walks that separate the transportation “terminals” from the immigration offices. That said, the view from the bridge that unites the two countries is, in my opinion, the prettiest “Welcome to ...” view that you’re likely to find in Central America. So, if your travels take you this way, make sure you...

Beyond the Market in Masaya

by thelukey

The town of Masaya is probably best-known for its highly regarded artesan market, but visitors who just roll into town, load up on souvenirs, and then return to Granada or Managua are missing quite a bit, including the impressive views over the Laguna de Masaya from the malecón behind the Estadio Roberto Clemente, the baseball stadium itself, and a couple of attractive (though fairly run-down) colonial chruches.

Leon’s Museo de Tradiciones y Leyendas

by thelukey

Leon’s Museum of Traditions and Legends, located in a building that for nearly sixty years housed the infamous XXI jail, where political prisoners were held and tortured, pays tribute to a sampling of Nicaraguan folk tales and to the jail’s cruel history.

Granada

by thelukey

This picture, taken from the bell tower of Granada’s Iglesia La Merced, affords an eye-in-the-sky view of two of Granada’s main attractions – its striking yellow cathedral (representative of the city’s wealth of excellently renovated colonial-era architectural treasures), and the Lago de Nicaragua in the background. It’s hard to imagine anyone planning a trip to Nicaragua – even if just as a stop-over between more touristed Costa Rica and Guatemala – not scheduling at least a day in Granada into their itinerary.

Sandinista Graffiti/Murals in Estelí

by thelukey

Truth be told, I didn’t find Estelí to be too terribly interesting during my brief visit, but the town’s many pro-Sandinista murals make a walk around town more enjoyable than it would otherwise be. I guess I’d recommend a stop-over in Estelí if you happen to be in the area (perhaps taking the mountain route between Nicaragua and Honduras), but I wouldn’t necessary go out of my way to return there. By the way, the mural pictured states (roughly):“Rights are takennot asked for, grasped atnot begged for.”

The Mirador in Catarina

by thelukey

The truly panoramic view of the Laguna de Apoyo afforded from the Mirador in Catarina is in and of itself reason enough to make a brief detour to this small town, whose other attractions include a number of plant nurseries and an attractively simple colonial church.

Explore Masaya Volcano & its National Park

by BorderHopper

Visiting the Masaya National Park is a must if you are in the region between Managua and Granada. The park features no less than 6 volcanos....2 or 3 of which are still active. You could stand on the rim of Volcan Santiago and peer into its firery depths. We were told stories about Volcan Santiago being used as a depository of humans who were tossed over the rim by the Nicaraguan government during their civil war in the early 1980's. Apparently the indiginous population around the volcano also made human sacrafices in this volcano until Catholic missionaries in the 18th century put a stop to this practice. The Priests described these volcanos as "the gates of hell". With the smell of sulfer and hot steam billowing from its bowels this area could seem like the gates to hell......but I found it to be a fascinating place to visit. It was also my first up close look at an active volcano.

Omotepe Island

by realde14

The Omotepe island in the Lake Nicaragua consists of two volcanos, the Concepcion at 4430 feet and the Maderas volcano at 3833 feet. Both can be climbed by hiring local guides. We did the Maderas one, supposedly the less strenuous one, but it was pretty tough with all the mud. It is a bit disspointing because at the toip of the volcano is only a small lagoon, a vert small reward for all this climbingIt did offer some nice wildlife like howler monkeys and boas and walking through the cloud forest did have some nice aspects.

Las Isletas

by realde14

These little islands in the Lake Nicaragua, just off Granada, were formed through volcanic eruption of nearby Mochombo volcano. You can visit them on a boat or on a kayak, which allows you to take in the varies species of birds that live on these islands.
