    Unfortunately, nobody is perfect...

One day we asked the boatman to take us to an island we could see on our way but was not normally visited. He was reluctant but after we insisted he conceded. So we landed on it and the disappointment came in a matter of seconds. The whole island was littered so badly that we felt sorry for the poor island !! Kuna boatmen use it to throw their waste! There were all kinds of empty cans and plastic boxes, empty bottles and broken parts of boat accessories. On the other side there were all kinds of nasty insects that bit us fiercely during our short walk. The bushes were impassable so we decided to come back and stop feeding the sand flies with our blood. On the way back we saw a boat on the beach with the name 'Coco Blanco' on it. We followed the footsteps and what we discovered was the greatest disappointment of all. Two people working for the ...expensive hotel were taking water from a filthy pool in the middle of the island. The pool was so filthy that the water had a greenish colour and was covered a yellow- green ugly layer of dirt. We were so astonished that we couldn't but ask them if they were really taking that water to the hotel...They answered in the most natural way that of course they did but they wouldn't use it for ...drinking but for ....washing!!! We couldn't believe our ears. So we asked our boat man to take us to Coco Blanco to see the hotel. The 90$ huts was another disillusioning sight. There was no customer so we went in the cabins to have a look. The foam mattresses were not covered with the bed sheet and they were so disgustingly dirty as was the whole room that we rushed out in terror. The whole setting was quite beautiful but what should you pay 90$ for? If the money went to the Kuna community things wouldn't be so bad but I heard the owner is Italian and the Kunas just work for them. Anyway...You can just visit it from any island you are staying. Well, I suppose my mattress would not be in a better condition if I had the courage to uncover it...I just didn't do it! After all I was only paying 35$.
On another ride we went to a beautiful island called Isla Hierba. It was so attractive and dreamy that we decided to have a walk around it before swimming. On the way I picked a bag full of litter, plastic scraps and 11 old rusty lighters. I brought them to the Kuna family to get rid of them. The man, who was in charge of cleaning, was very apologetic saying he had been sick for 2 days and couldn't .......but the lighters were there I am sure for more than a year. Maybe you will find the same ones, too, when you go...
