Favorite thing: Panama City is only as dangerous as most of the latin american capitals, it is colon that you have to avoid on the other side of the country. you should have no problem seeing the canal and the old part of panama. if you are coming in from south america, you have to fly into panama, as there is no land connection available from south america into panama. on the atlantic side are some sand islands where the ferociously independent Kuna indians live (san Blas).. you will have to fly there as well, no road connections (not easy anyway). Avoid Colon..

Favorite thing: Check the daily flight from Allbrook Airport at www.flyairpanama.com or www.aeroperlas.com
Reliable little planes that safely connect he capital with the main cities & touristic spots.
We recommend to stay in the beautiful casco viejo (san felipe), we do not particoularly like the city life (we live in a remote pacific beach near the border with Costa Rica)but we do love this part of Panama City with its view on both the modern Paitilla and the decadent Causway.
Best place to stay: Hospedaje Casco Viejo www.hospedajecascoviejo.com
We highly recommend Las Lajas Beach (Chiriqui region) for the peace lovers...
Caldera's Hot Springs in Chiriqui are a must as well as the narby Cagilones of Gualaca
Fondest memory: The wonderful shore of Las Lajas beach...we came here 5 yrs ago as backpackers and never forgot it...in fact since last yr we permanently live here.

Favorite thing: Nearly one million people live in the New Panama City
Panama City, a vibrant metropolis located at the Pacific side of the Panama Canal. is without a doubt the most Sophisticated and Developmented city of Central America.
It is a place of skyscrapers, resplendent suburbs and historic monuments from the city's Spanish past.
Old Panama City has been named "Patrimony of humanity" by UNESCO
Fondest memory: When arriving by air you will see a high class metropolis skyline and maybe you will be wondering if you are landing in a First World country...but just look beyond and you´ll se a heavy green rainforest whith secluded beacxhes just and hour away by car. come for the whole package, a big city action and hiden paradise filled by nature as well!!!

Favorite thing: This is it. An island among many other in San Blas, but the one where our skipper always chooses to stop for an easy two-days stop before we get into serious sailing away from Panama.
The Archipelago has many islands, some more overrun than others by tourist boats, and some more populated, with all the drawbacks this brings to traditional life. I was just lucky that the skipper I chose for the journey knew this particular island well and knew what his usual customers were hoping for: a trip to a really virgin island! This one had 3 or 4 Kuna Indian families living on it and they knew him, since this is where he always stops on the way to Colombia.
You couldn't ask for a more virgin island! Ask questions before you pay for a boat trip to the Archipelago, don't settle for the facility of going to over-visited islands, there are hundreds of others where you'll be welcomed and find peace.

Favorite thing: a former colony of the spanish empire for more than three centuries, Panama declared its independence from Spain on November 28, 1821, and later became a province of Colombia, from which it seceded 82 years later, on November 3, 1903. Thus, we are celebrating a day of independence and a day of separation in the same month!
There are several paredes all around this month throughout the country
Fondest memory: all over the country the biggest two paredes take place on november 3 and 28

Favorite thing: PANAMA CITY, Panama, May 24, 2005 – Mickey Mouse has come a long way from “Steamboat Willie.” Moving from riverboats to cruise ships, Mickey’s ship, the Disney Magic, crossed the Panama Canal on Friday, May 20, marking the ship’s first-ever cruise through the engineering marvel. And, it happened just in time to celebrate Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary. Dr. Stanley Muschett, manager of executive administration at the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), presented the ship’s captain with a plaque on behalf of the ACP.
Experiencing the eighth wonder of the world, Mickey Mouse poses aboard the Disney Magic as they make their way through the Panama Canal to the Pacific. To the right of Mickey are the Miraflores Visitors’ Center and the Miraflores Locks Control Center.

Favorite thing: Carnival is celebrated in many cities of the country, but the carnival in the City of Las Tablas is recognized as the best in the country. It takes place during February, about 40 days before Good Friday. By tradition the town is divided into two groups called tunas: calle arriba and calle abajo, who compete in every aspect of the carnival. Events follow a similar pattern on each of the four days of Carnival (Saturday to Tuesday). In the morning, there are water, blue dye and shaving cream fights in the central plaza, and the two tunas parade in street clothes, dancing and singing songs praising their group or ridiculizing the other.
Fondest memory: The morning events are called the culecos. At night people dress in party clothes; the dancing parades include decorated floats. After the parades at night, each tuna goes back to their toldo (their base) and join a large dancing party until early hours of the morning. Next day ... ... back to the central plaza for more culecos, unless it is Wednesday (Ash Wednesday according to the Catholic Calendar), when people that came to the town for the carnival leave and there does not appear to be a single soul in the central plaza.

Favorite thing: Panama staged the 1986 and 2003 Miss Universe pageant.
Panama was selected as the venue of this prestigious event for its unique qualities such as natural beauty, security and infrastructure.
The country was proud to have had a winner of the Miss Universe, Justine Pasek; and also holds a finalist in 8 diferents years.

Fondest memory: The beauty of the nature itself.
When walking around the country you will find very beautiful faces ( and bodies) of women, maybe thanks to its diversity in razes and cultures.

Favorite thing: The Panama canal is mostly the only thing people now about this central American country. There is of course much more to see, but I think it is a must to see those impressive ocean-going vessels go trough the huge canal locks. The Locks of Miraflores are a good place, just a little bit west of Panama city.
Recently the museum and visitor centre where renewed and so also the entrance price. While before it was free, now non-residents pay 10$, residents pay only for the museum (6$). Also note that at 12 o'clock the locks close for lunch break, so there are no vessels passing by at that time.
