Boquete Things to Do

At Cafe Ruiz you can arrange to have a tour around the Ruiz plantation which is said to produce the best coffee in the area. You can see the plants, and then go on to the processing plant where a guide will give you all the details of the coffee treatment until it is put in the bags.
Of course you can try and buy coffee although it is found in the super Baru and other shops around the city.

This is a government licenced (ANAM) wild animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center run by a couple with great love and care for animals. They have put huge amounts of work, energy and money to make this settlement and keep it running. The animals are kept in spacious cages hidden among the beautiful gardens, until they are well enough to be returned to the wild again. The couple are very friendly and can themselves guide you around to help you enjoy the environment and understand the little secrets and personal stories of every animal. Their pet when I was there was a cute overactive monkey called Macy, running about in her diapers!!!
Visitors have the chance to interact with the animals and also help in the socialising and rehabilitation of the rescued monkeys.
There are Panamanian Geoffroys Tamarins monkeys, Margay and rare and exotic birds from Australia, Asia, Africa and South America..
There are many kinds of birds like Quetzals, Parrots, colourful Macaws, Owls, Hawks even a huge hen!!! They have the largest butterfly house including a nursery for the famous Blue Morpho and Owl species, that you see coming out of their cocoon. There are monkeys, a beautiful wild cat rescued and raised with difficulties, squirrels and a rare animal called Kinkajou.
The gardens are beautifully landscaped with 400 different species of trees, shrubs and plants, spectacular fountains and waterfalls. There are also bromeliads and orchids. You can take your time walking around and rest in the sitting areas conveniently placed around the gardens.
It's a place you shouldn't miss.
The 5$ entrance is nothing compared to the immense contribution of these people to the unfortunate animals.
I was taken there in a friend's car in about 20 minutes. It is easily accessible by a taxi, too.
It is open Mon-Fri from 9:00am until 4:00pm and Sat & Sun From 10:00am to 4:00pm.

The beautiful flower gardens of this private residence cover an immense area and are so colourful and nicely manicured that you don't want to leave. They have planted all the endemic plants and flowers and are taking excellent care of them. As they are open to the public they are visited by big groups of locals coming in buses. There are wooden figures of animals in the gardens and pleasant flower beds, topiaries, waterfalls, benches and pools full of exotic fish. There is a tower from where you have a general view of the surrounding coutryside, too. The most astonishing thing is that entry is free!
You can easily walk there or take a taxi for 1$.

Cerro Punta is on the west side of Volcan Baru at an altitude of 1980m. Hiking for Volcan Baru and the National Park Amistad starts here. The trail of Quetzals is better accessed from Cerro Punta than from Boquete.
The town has lovely views and a cool climate. It is less visited than Boquete. It is a very pleasant highland resort among coffee fields, strawberries, lush vegetation and many stables where fine race horses and prize cattle are raised.
Buses from David take a little more than 2 hours and the fare is 2.70$.

Volcan Baru can be seen from every spot in Boquete. It has seven craters on the top and is the highest point in Panama. With its altitude of 3,474m it offers views of both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on clear days. In the lower levels its fertile soil supports very productive agriculture, such as coffee, citrus trees and strawberries among others. Then going higher the tall trees dominate the scenery, interrupted by crystalline rivers, waterfalls and rich wild life. The cool climate makes it perfect for walking and bird watching. Quetzals and toucans are often spotted in the forest as well as a great number of local birds. There are also pumas, tapirs, raccoons...The trail starts from Boquete or Cerro Punta. The trail from Boquete is easier but it's going up very steep for 14 km and will take take you about six hours from the park gate to the top. You can take a taxi to the park gate which is 8km from Boquete.
There are many hiking options however so you can choose the one that fits your abilities. Camping on the top is a good idea for excellent views at sunrise.
Cerro Punta is also offering wonderful hiking trails such as La Nevera and El Sendero de los Quetzales. The scenic trail of the Quetzals starts there and through a wonderful scenery following the river Caldera it brings you to Boquete. You can do it the other way, too, but most hikers prefer to start at Cerro Punta because it is on higher ground so they will have to go downhill.

Don't miss going to see Mi Jardin es Su Jardin. There are lovely flower gardens surrounding a private estate. The estate is owned by the former owners of the electric company. The house is private but you can walk all around the grounds to admire the flowers, play ground, fish ponds and buildings.
