Gonzales Surf Camp y Restaurante is a small, fonda-type restaurant next to Los Buzos Resort. Nubia usually has sancocho (soup) and a meat dish and a fish dish every day. There is no set menu, just whatever they have on hand or got that day. Also, drink choices are limited. You can get Coca-Cola, Fresca, Ginger Ale or Cerveza Panama, and sometimes, fruit juice.
It is limited, but it is delicious and filling.
They also have a place to launch your boat on the beach and hammocks under the roof so you can hang out before or after surfing or boating.

Favorite Dish: They do the typical sancocho soup and arroz con pollo, as well as carne or puerco guisado and sometimes they have corvina or shrimp. Their meals typically are meat and fish with rice and a small salad for $1.50. They sell Coke, Fresca, Canada Dry Ginger Ale, sometimes they have Kist soda. They also have Cerveza Panama and Soberana.

This is the sign to look for... As you approach from Los Buzos

Cambutal Transportation

  • Buses to Cambutal.

Currently, there is bus service to Tonosi from Panama City, the main bus terminal at Albrook. It is only three times a day, but saves one from having to change buses in Las Tablas. The bus from Panama City to Las Tablas is $8 and you have to then walk about a mile or take a cab to the other, local bus terminal to get the bus to Tonosi. Not all...

  • How to get to Los Buzos

To drive to Los Buzos Resort it takes about 6 hours (and when one gets below Las Tablas or Pedasí, the roads are not in good shape all the way to Tonosí! The road below Las Tablas to Tonosi is fine the first 18 miles then it is very rough into Tonosi, then it is in very good condition, again, to Los Buzos. If one goes through Pedasi, it is about...

Cambutal Local Customs

  • Conjunto Folklorico de Cambutal

CFC is a troupe of teens who dance traditional Panamanian dances. If you are here for a special occasion, you may see them perform for us. We do hire them for special occasions, like New Years Eve and Carnavale. They are all local kids, locally trained and the musicians are local, too. They are all very talented and amazing! Dilce, the leader and...

Pre-Columbian artifacts are found in this area. It is illegal to trade in them. If someone comes to you and offers something like the articles in the picture for sale, please, do not buy them! If you are caught with them, you will go to jail! Panama is very serious about keeping these artifacts in the country and does not want them on someone's...

Cambutal Warnings and Dangers

  • Tides

The reef fronting the resort is almost completely uncovered during ebb tide and almost completely under water at neap tide. Hence, my recommendation to bring reef walkers in my packing list tip. One can walk the reef, however, one should be careful to see the tide chart for the day, as if the tide comes in while you are on the reef, unless you are...

  • Bugs

As in my packing list tip, you need to bring bug repellant, or you will be eaten alive! We recommend Autan. It comes in a yellow and red container and is in pump spray or lotion. Also, there are scorpions around here, so check your shoes before putting them on and avoid cavernous places. There are snakes but they tend to only come out at night,...

  • Be safe and healthy!

Travel medical insurance is highly recommended, as if you fall ill, the closest hospital is in Tonosí, 45 minutes away! The Panamanian CSS (Social Security) and private hospitals and clinics will not treat foreigners if they do not have insurance or a CSS ficha. So please, avoid a hassle and spend about $30 to get good travel medical insurance!...

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you have reef walkers, you need to bring them as at low tide the reef across from the resort is accessable on foot. You could use sandals but they may not fill the bill.
Also bring hiking boots if you want to hike the trails and bird watch, it is rugged and sandals may not be appropritate, plus there are many ground bugs that will eat up naked feet!

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bug repellant, you REALLY need this, we have some for sale at the resort, but if you need a specific type because of allergies or personal preference, make sure you bring it or you WILL be eaten alive by the bugs! Evenso, nothing seems to repel the "chitras" little gnats that bite everywhere, they are a "noseeum", so you can't see them trying to bite you like mosquitoes and can swat them.
We recommend getting Autan lotion or spray repellant. It is in a yellow and red container. We sell the lotion for $4, but you can buy it anywhere in Panama for about $3. We also sell Off! in a pump spray bottle for $8, as well, but it is not as effective as Autan.
Also recommend bringing Benadryl for bug bites to releave itching and antibiotic cream, like Neosporin. They sell Benadryl cream in Tonosi for about $2 for a 1/2 oz tube. Also they sell antibiotic cream for about $5 for a 1/4 oz tube.

Photo Equipment: Bring your cameras! Recommend waterproof as you will probably be doing water activities.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: If you have surfing equipment, of course bring that! We do have some boards of various sizes and types for rent, but if you have your own and can afford to bring them, please do. If you have snorkeling or SCUBA gear, please bring those. We have no dive equipment here as yet. But we have some snorkeling gear.

Be sure to bring one of these!
