You cannot come to Panama and not visit the Canal. If you're in the Pacific side of the Isthmus, you should go to Miraflores Locks (20 minutes from downtown) where you'll find the recently inaugurated Vistors' Center. In that same building they've opened a restaurant which is open from 11:00 am through 11:00 pm. Watch the ships transit through the locks while enjoying dinner and drinks.

Favorite thing: The ruins of the old capital, Panamá viejo are located just 6,5 kms northeast of Panama city. Although the ruins might give a slight idea of its former glory, you'll have to have a big fantasy! But I've to say that the new museum (between the site and the capital) gives a much better and clearer view.
