A great excursion in Veraguas is a drive down the west coast of Azuero in Mariato District. It's on the the few places in Panama to see the sun setting over the sea on these west-facing beaches. Offshore in the Gulf of Montijo, one can see the island of Cébaco.
Playa La Reina has golden sand but the surf is poor. Malena Beach has better waves and is one of the sea turtle nesting sites. The beach is sandy grey. Further south, Torio has strikingly red cliffs. The surf is great here. Any of the villages have simple eateries where one can order grill or fried corvinas with a side of patacones and a cold icy beer. Simplicity is heavenly!
