I must admit, I was a little weary getting a moped. I hate motorcycles, cause i know too many who have perished by way of the two-wheeler. Those who perished though were either doing something rediculous on the bike or speeding excessively in high traffic. The moped topped out at 35 miles an hour. Even at this speed getting around this island was less than easy.

Isolated beaches

Not a person in sight for hours...even days! One of the greatest luxuries of Culebra is that it isn't spoiled by herds of tourists yet. Although Flamenco Beach is usually busy, the other beaches on the island (especially those accessible to a 4x4 vehicle only) are completely deserted! WONDERFUL! :-)

Abandoned Naval Helicopter Pad

There is a Naval helicopter pad that was abandoned many years ago. The locals know all about it and can give you easy directions to locate it (there is one lonely road up the hill). Although the road is not in very good shape (another reason to rent a 4x4!), it is a fairly short drive to the top! The view from the helicopter pad is phenomenal! While we were up there we had an added bonus - a helicopter actually flew from the beach below up to the helicopter pad. It didn't land (the old pad is too overgrown for that), but it was flying very low (less than 500 feet away from us!). It was a VERY cool experience for Arnold because he LOVES aviation (I bought him helicopter flight lessons last year for his birthday!).

Best snorkeling in Culebra!

Nearly all of the beaches on Culebra (except Flamenco) are isolated and quiet. The snorkeling is good nearly wherever you go. However, we found particularly good snorkeling off a side road near Flamenco. You will need a 4x4 vehicle to get there (unless you want really muddy shoes). It is a very bumpy ride, however it is worth it. When you get to Flamenco, you will see a "staff" building to your immediate left as you enter the parking lot. Stop there and request access to the dirt road that is roped off next to the building. Access to this road is FREE, however it is first-come, first-served, and you will need to "check in" on a clipboard with the staff. Go down the winding, bumpy, rocky, muddy road until you reach the very end (it dead ends at the beach). Park your vehicle (hopefully 4x4!) on the side of the road.
