La Parguera, otherwise known as the Bioluminescent/Phosphoroscent Bay, is located in Lajas in the southwestern part of Puerto Rico. Apparently, this phenomenon happens throughout the warm seas of the world, but only in Puerto Rico does it visibly and consistently show up on an everyday basis. On a dark and moonless night, you will marvel at the natural twinkling/sparkling lights quickly moving all around the underwater surface. This spectacular underwater bioluminescence is triggered by millions of micro-organisms that initiate their "lighting" power to ward off predators.
This natural wonder is the biggest draw of Lajas. There are many tour boat operators who cater to visitors of the area. Do experience the "bioluminescence" of the bay at night, but make sure that it is completely dark before going out there in the water.
Enjoy the Bioluminescent Bay!
