It is advisable to drive when there is still light going back to San Juan. The roads are treacherous and it gets dark easily because of the trees covering the roads. Besides, the road after the freeway ends (once you get up on the zigzag road) is not wide, and it only allows one vehicle at a time. The local drivers beep each time they turn into a curve just to make sure that there was no incoming vehicle.
Make sure to ask directions from the residents in Maricao (those who drive) and not rely on the maps sold in the stores in San Juan. One of the Rotarians who rented a car got lost for about two hours because the map he was following was wrong.
