My first night in town, my flight arrived a bit late into San Juan. By the time I got to my hotel, it was pretty late but I met up with someone who had offered to show me around. Originally we were going to hang out in Pinones, but it was too late for that, so she mentioned this little local bar. She didn't think I would be interested because there was live music, in Spanish. But that was what I was looking for...something that didn't cater only to tourists. San Juan is a huge spring break destination and after we ate dinner, I wanted to get out of that scene. She took me to this bar called Shots. The name is the only thing here in English. We listened to a 2 man band sing and play a variety of instruments. It was pretty cool.
Hmmm...I was kinda dressed up...I think most people were a little dressed up, but just because they wanted to be. It's nothing that you would feel the need to dress up for. Concrete floor, lots of open space, pool tables, small bar...very laid back Leave a Comment Theme: Live MusicAddress: Isla Verde MallDirections: Isla Verde

I don't even know if this is really the name of this place, but that's what everyone I talked to referred to it as. It's located in Isla Verde and when I call it a local bar, I mean locals that NOW live in PR, mostly from NJ/PA/NY. Like every other bar I went to pretty much, it's an open air bar on the ocean. The drinks are reasonably priced, the people are very nice and for me, it was great because my hotel room was just up the stairs:)
I was told that in general Puerto Ricans like to dress up, but it got to the point where I wanted to look okay but not draw anymore attention to myself. It ended up never being a desirable position to be in...so I say dress wear whatever you're comfortable in. LANCE NO LIKE TECHNO. Hmmm... I mean, I don't DIE for it, but I can appreciate its sacrificing of Rythmn for BEAT. Anyway, Babylon started a TECHNO set, and we almost walked, he was so bored. Eventually, they started up w/ some Booty Music, and we stayed for a spell. But per the blurb: BABYLON: As the name suggests, this club prides itself on its decadence. I question this assertion... but that's me. It's a little TIRED / DATED inside. "An Ibiza WANNABE Club from YesterDecade" is more like it! The central dance floor is pack with posh patrons dancing to dance, house and Latin music. A wraparound balcony means that non-dancers and those needing a rest donýt miss any of the action. (Their Statement. Again... Posh Patrons is questionable. AMUSING might be more like it. I love people watching, so I was cool with it.) There is a cover charge ($10.00) to enter but hotel guests are free. I'd say PASS on Babylon if you hear of something really happening going on.
Dressy-stylish attire. (Their suggestion. Questionable attire, from what we saw...) Leave a Comment Theme: DancingAddress: 6063 Av Isla VerdePhone: 787-791-2781Directions: Isla Verde, near airport, in the Wyndham El San Juan Hotel

The Condado area near San Juan has lots of Hotels with Casinos...We popped into the Casino at the Marriot for, oh about 15 minutes. Lou was in the mood to gamble, but when we got there, we could tell it wasn't a winning kind of a night. The Casino is not all that big, but they do have $2 roulette tables :) The Hotel is pretty though, we wandered around, checked out the pool and the beach, and a live band was playing at the bar (though they were not good enough to keep us sticking around)
No open sandals or flip flops for the guys, or tank tops. Girls can get away with a lot more...or less depending on how you look at it. Leave a Comment Theme: CasinoDirections: Rtb 26 to Condado

Shots Bar and Grill is a good mix. Cover is $5 but worth it. The centre of it all is a bar that goes all around the venue. On the left side of the bar is the sit down area, its filled with booths and tables so you can sit down and eat and drink or take a rest from dancing. To the right of the bar is the dancefloor, booths and tables line the outside of it. Drinks and food are at a reasonable price. The music is a mix of english and spanish top 40 intervened with live spanish rock bands. Its a good local hangout, not too touristy. I partied there for St. Patrick's day and had a blast.
No running shoes. People like to show off a bit of club gear here but you won't be uncomftorable in jeans and decent shoes. Shots is almost at the end of the strip on Ave. Isla Verde, right before the Ritz Carlton. It's a great bar with live music on the weekends. Alot of locals go there, especially on Salsa night, which I believe is Thursday. That is the night when the older crowds seem to go, also. The cover charge is also not that outrageous, with less expensive drinks, too.
Puerto Ricans tend to dress a little more properly than going clubbing in NYC, in respect to men. Guys should not wear sneakers, but jeans are usually OK worn with a nice button-down shirt. C'mon you're on vacation, look nice, go out and have fun. Leave a Comment Theme: NightclubAddress: Avenida Isla Verde

Both of both worlds. The outside of Lupi's is a charming and small patio that surrounds the bar. Excellent drinks and food while over looking the busy street life on Isla Verde Avenue. Inside, a club unfolds approximately 10 p.m. with live Spanish Rock Bands and Top 40 DJ. You get dinner, drinks, dancing and music all in one and for an affordable price.

Located in the heart of Old San Juan, on Calle San Sebastián, Rumba is very possibly the best place in the world for salsa dancing. On the night I went, they had a hella live band that played some amazing, hot salsa! Some people will tell you to go to the big hotels for salsa dancing, such as the El San Juan or the Marriott Condado, but it's way more fun to go to places like Rumba, where the Puerto Ricans go and there are almost no tourists. I met 3 of the most adorable Puerto Rican girls there and had a great time! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

If you are looking for Puerto Rican life, you're not going to find it here. The place was bursting with overly drunken, american kids. Neither the music, decor or drinks represented Puerto Rico in any way. If you're an american frat kid, this is your place. If you came looking for a cultural experience, move on.
Most people were skantily clad, very tacky may I add. I thought I saw a No shirt, No shoes, No service sign in the window. Leave a Comment
