The south side of the island is calm and beautiful. Its kinda far away but a fantastic way to see it is to drive from SJU to Arecibo and take the highway across the mountains in the center of the Island to Ponce in the South. Then you can make your way around the west side and back to San Juan the next day for a leisurly and super fun 2 day trip with awesome sightseeing and some beach/surfing on the way. Plus you can see the observatory and get a feel for all the islands climate in this trip

Take a ferry boat or fly from either Isla Grande or Fajardo to Culebra. This tiny island is a gem travelers usually overlook. I think it's a perfect place for those who are in need of relax, soul-serching o just think. Some of the best semi-wild beaches of the caribbean are in Culebra. It's a snorkelers paradise where you can either look for war artifacts (The place was used as a US Navy bomb range till the 70's) or the most beautiful coral. If you have a fantasy about 'doing it' in a secluded beach, you most likely make that fantasy true here. Tourism is not really developed here. There is just a couple of little hotels and the rest are just guest houses and also a few rental places. Having a beer with locals or having some just-caught-in fish at the wharf is the most you can do for nightlife.
If you look for excitement, forget about this place. Is not for you. But if you want to be away from everything you will never forget it.
Oh, by the way, you better don't go there during the week end. Lots of people from the 'big island' (Puerto Rico) go to the beach there. That cuts away severely the kind of peace and tranquility I'm talking about.
A ferry ticket from Fajardo is just $3 but there are only a boat around in the morning and another in the afternoon. Sometimes the boat solds out before departure so if you drive from San Juan, better be there 45-60 min earlier. A conmmutter airplane from Fajardo costs about 20-25$ one way. If your party is big enough and you call ahead they may even use one of the smaller aircrafts just for you.

The old San Juan also has beautiful little streets and colorful buildings. There are some dangerous areas but we stayed in populated areas so we felt pretty safe. Take the time to stroll, window shop and enjoy the view. That's me and one of my friends on a cobalt blue cobble stone street. Check out those vibrant colors on those buildings.

Many of the stores here are geared for tourists but you can find some neat little cafes and local stores. We went into a jewerly store cuz one of my friends was thinking of buying a watch for her boyfriend beause it's chaper there. While my friend was purchasing the watch, my other girlfriend was getting hit on by a guy who worked there. We got his phone # because he said that he would take us to some hot local night spots but I think we were too pooped from our trip and we eneded up going bed around 10PM. After getting in that jacuzzi at hour hotel, we were just too relaxed to go out anywhere. Lesson learned - avoid the jacuzzi at the end of the day, if you are planning to go out at night.

If you want to go to a very popular beach on the area where all the young and older locals go, then try not to miss Ocean Park around the Condado area, it's very difficult to find a parking spot but you will find one!! the day to go will be on sundays, and if you are looking for the pretty girls or the hot guys this is the place to go!!

But, you know, all of this touring around can make you really, really thirsty. Bacardi Rum just happens to give tours and free frozen beverages after the tour. Did someone say rum punch?? We spent a couple of hours here - not touring - drinking rum LOL I don't know about you, but I will come back here again, and again, and again and ....

Do you remember your history? Ponce De Leon was attempting to discover the fountain of youth (among other things). He may have just found it here...

Our ship was a small luxury Italian Liner called 'Costa Allegra' out of Napoli. It no longer cruises here, but rather in Europe. The personalized service could not be beat. And the food ... well ... you would have had to have been there to believe it. San Juan has such a deep port that the ship just literally pulled up to the sidewalk. Amazing. You were immediately in the city.

The very first thing we did was to locate a local cabbie. I negotiated a price with him for the entire day. I told him NOT to take us to the places where tourists hang out. I told him we wanted to have dinner with him at one of his favorite local places (with no tourists). You should really try this sometimes. The cabbie was so proud of his city that he was busting his buttons to show it off to us. You almost got the feeling that he would have paid US to allow him to show us his beautiful San Juan.

The water was crashing thunderously on the rocks below. Would make a good movie about lover's leaps :)

There are two imposing fortifications at each end of the city. This one is El Morro. How's this for a dramatic entrance. Here, let me show you some of it...
