by bdbrewer Would you believe this is the 2nd oldest church in this hemisphere?? Unbelievable! It looks new. And, guess who is buried here? Yep, you are right. Mr. Ponce de Leon himself. He obviously loved it here. Leave a Comment

by Cherie_J In 1820, when Ponce was just beginning to progress commercialy and agriculturaly the town was partially destroyed by a terrible fire that burned more than one hundred homes. Three years later, governor Don Miguel de la Torre, impressed by the tragedy, founded the first corps of firefighters on the Island. Men between the ages of 16 to 60 were required to train as firefighters and to provide their own equipment. Although this firehouse is awesome...you spent almost the entire day couped up in a car going up and down hills...so be prepared to get car sick. It's great & all but there isn't much else that makes the drive worth it. Leave a Comment

by Cherie_J Tyan and I went cave exploring while in Puerto Rico. This is the 'Parque de las Cavernas'. It is the 3rd largest underground river-cave system. We saw stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone, and sparkling crystal. There were 3 crater like sink holes that were all lined with all types of tropical vegetation. Purely beautiful! One sink hole called the Spiral Sinkhole was 205 steps down. It was great and terribly cold...good thing I was a good little girl scout with my extra layers. Here I am inside the cave and there is a natural spring running through there. It is 'believed' by some that this fountain is actually a fountain of youth. Wella, my mama didn't raise no fool...I had to drink some just to be sure I didn't miss out. Leave a Comment

I went to the caves, which I would not recomend, they were NOT deep and I think only lazy people who barely get off the crusise ships and eat huge burgers at The Hard Rock cafe like them. however it might be worth it if you do the propelling tour, also the Cathedral cave sounded better. I also went to the Arecib Observatory, and I do not recomend this either. I really like science and the thought that we are calling UFO's, but it's boaring. The short movie they show is weird it's about what the scientist eat, and where they sleep, and even shows the maid cleaning there rooms, but nothing about ET's or how powerful the radio telescope is, etc? the seceret tennis courts in Old San Jaun. go to Procesion statue at the end of Caleta de Las Monjas go right- up a small hill through gates you will reach a fork in the road if you go right it will lead you to the fortress which is a nice tour. If you go left you will pass a childrens day care center which strangly enough has tons of beer cans out front every day? The courts are just past it and free. enjoy Leave a Comment

by svillegirl El Morro overlooks a cemetary and I just had to go there. Even from a distance I could tell that it was a special place. While there we talked to the care taker and had his dog keeping us company. (he insisted the dog wasn't his, but it was obvious he had a great affection for it) Leave a Comment

by bcc8 Luquillo Beach, which is on the eastern coast of the island, is a beautiful and peaceful beach. It is about 15 minutes east of El Yunque. When I went to the beach one morning, I walked for about half an hour before encountering another person. Definitely my favorite beach on the island... Leave a Comment

by bcc8 Ponce is on the southern coast of the island about 2 hours from San Juan. It is a small, picturesque town. I really enjoyed the drive through the mountains to get to Ponce. This is a photo of the town square. The statue is of Ponce de Leon, imagine that! Leave a Comment

by bcc8 The Arecibo Observatory on the northwest part of the island is an interesting site to see. It is the world's largest radio telescope. It has been featured in the movie Contact and the Bond movie The World Is Not Enough. It is really out in the middle of no where. The site is about 1.5 hours west of San Juan. The telescope is tucked away in the hills near some rural neighboorhoods. Half the fun of Arecibo was getting there...it's a gorgeous drive! Leave a Comment

We stayed at the tourist hotels in San Juan, right by the airport. Once you get out of San Juan and go exloring, the country is a lot of fun! Leave a Comment
