    More About Puerto Rico

by starship Written Feb 5, 2005 935 reviews

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: A few pieces of general information might help make planning for your trip to Puerto Rico easier, so I have added a few tips here.

The average temperature is 83 - 85 degrees with some humidity, and bright sunshine so will want to take full advantage of the opportunity to use the beautiful beaches, fishing, walking and hiking in Puerto Rico. Sun block, sunglasses and broad brim hats can be well used here.

Puerto Rico is in the Atlantic Time Zone and does not observe Daylight Savings Time.

There is no duty on goods purchased in Puerto Rico and brought back to the United States.

Transportation around San Juan can be easily had by taxi and rates are set for the most common corridors, e.g., the airport to Old San Juan; airport to hotels, etc. Verify rates before you engage the taxi and sharing taxis is a helpful way to budget costs. A new urban train is on the horizon for the island, but no date yet for its inaugural run. (Anyone with info. about this, please let me know.)

Over 1 million tourists arrive in Puerto Rico by cruise ship each year. Piers 1 - 6 are at the foot of Old San Juan which makes walking into town a only a matter of minutes. A new cruise ship terminal has been built and will contain many shops and perhaps restaurants. Tenants were moving in when we were there in November, 2004. It will also be a point of security for those leaving and returning to their cruise ship.

Good pair of walking shoes is recommended for Old San Juan because of the cobblestone streets and inclines.

Information can be obtained and booking tours can be done at "La Casita" (the little yellow building near the waterfront and cruiseship piers).

Calles del Viejo San Juan-Streets of Old San Juan

Cobblestone streets of Old San Juan

Favorite thing: Unfortunately, Old San Juan isn't pedestrian only. Many of the small cobbled stoned streets see heavy traffic and much of the old world charm that is Old San Juan is lost. Nonetheless, wander along the streets and dodge into the great shops and cafes you'll find along these streets.

    Typical Street in San Juan

Favorite thing: For the most part. perhaps the best way to really explore San Juan is by foot. Though we just had the afternoon to spend here, we made the most of it. We walked through this historic town and marvelled at the Spanish architecture and the vibrant tapestry of colour on the buildings. The STREETS OF OLD SAN JUAN were narrow and cobblestoned and humming with activity. Local folk and tourists alike were enjoying the warm sunny day.

Favorite thing: Walk, walk, walk. I would recommend that you park the car at the municipal parking lot located at the 'Paseo de la Princesa' and start your wandering through the wonderful streets in Old San Juan.

Fondest memory: Wandering around Old San Juan through the old cobblestone streets and the small quaint alleyways. For more pictures of streets found here in Old San Juan, please visit my travelouge.

    Walking around San Juan

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Just walking around the downtown area is a wonder on itself. It ain't no different from any other big city, but you can smell culture in the air. There's always some good cumbia music playing out of a window somewhere.

Favorite thing: We really enjoyed walking around and exploring old San Juan. There are some very quaint areas and lots of shopping. There is a nice open air market not far from the docks-but that is no surpise.

Fondest memory: I enjoyed Old San juan the most.

Favorite thing: You don't have to go to a nightclub to have a good time. The party goes on every night, especially on weekends. The club shown here is on Calle Tance, in Old San Juan.

    The cobblestone streets

by HispanicYob Written May 25, 2006 244 reviews

Favorite thing: Walking along the cobblestone streets gives you a genuine and rustic feeling of being in old San Juan the way it might've been years ago. The city has a lot to offer.
