Vieques Things to Do

  • Playa Media Luna

This beach was used as the set for the movie "Lord of the Flies" back a while ago. Indeed it has a "lost island" feeling. You can access the beach by a dirt road following the public beach "Sun Bay". Once there you will be welcomed to powder white sands and shallow waters for hundreds of feet. Ideal for families with children. One problem. No...

There is a little museum with some history and archaeology of Vieques' Pre-Columbian inhabitants, the Taino Indians. A little gift/crafts shop with also some books and in the back, the so...

  • Glow In The Dark

We went to Vieques to experience the bioluminescence mangrove bay. An incredible experience of swimming in microorganisms that contain both plant and animal cells. When disturbed by any movement in the water, a bright blue glow can be seen. Often described as swimming in fairy dust, or swimming in the stars. It really must be experienced. Check out...

If you like snorkeling or scuba diving, go to Green Beach. It has the most amazing coral reefs in the caribbean. And walk around the beach. You will probably find yourself walking completely alone, just listening to the birds in the palm trees, and to the wind whisteling through the leaves.

Old Navy Base - The whole West End of the island used to be used as an ammo storage facility for the Navy. All the ammo has been removed, the land given back to the Vieques Govenment, but remnants still remain. Here's a photo of one of the storage bunkers that can be found thoughout the old base.

The west side of this mile long pier serves as a great site to see lots of fish. The water tends to be calmer compared to other beaches on the island.

Drive around the island! You'll see lots of 'wild' horses. They don't look very wild, just not owned by anyone!
