Saint Kitts and Nevis Warnings and Dangers

  • Strong currents!

On the Island of Saint Kitts there are many fantastic beaches. But you should exercise caution if you are swimming on the Atlantic side. The currents are strong and in some spots it is dangerously strong. Don't go to the undeveloped beaches for swimming. Stay around the one with plenty of people in case of trouble. The snorkel trips are great...

  • Don't rent a scooter.

If you visit Saint Kitts you might be tempted to rent a scooter and buzz around the island. But I would highly advice against it. It is not the cost or any rip off, it is DANGEROUS! The roads are not all in great shape, in fact many are uneven and bumpy. The buses and taxis tend to drive like they are NASCAR drivers. You can see the island cheaply...

  • Local Scams run rampant

The locals understand that tourism is a vital factor in the success of their country so they will do whatever it takes to make money from them. They will rub "aloe vera" on you on the beach before you're able to say no and they will charge you a lot for this, which they won't tell you until they are done putting it on your whole body. Also, they...

  • Train Trouble

This is very old equipment. Sometimes the train doesn't run because it has broken down. Our table partners hadn't signed up for this expedition because they were afraid that the train wasn't running. It is a train which was converted from use hauling sugar cane to an attraction primarily for cruise ship passengers. But it is a deservedly popular...

  • Spiders, etc

Check your shoes before putting them on, and check your bed before climbing in. A friend recently was "greeted" and bitten by a large spider. There are other creepy crawlies as well as a poisonous shrub that causes a very nasty rash if you brush up against it.The Nevis1.com website has photos of the shrub. The land crab is not dangerous, I just...

  • Watch your head

Watch out for the monkeys in the trees. They won't hurt you but they may drop a mango on your head. They pick one and if they don't like the looks of it they throw it on the ground.

  • Money grubbers

Many people are poor so they are not afraid to come right up to you and ask for money. Or they will offer to wash your car for money, they use dirty water and don't finish the job. Don't give them money and don't feel bad.

  • Jellyfish and other stinging...

Jellyfish and other stinging oceanlife. Take a small container of meat tenderizer with you when you go to the beach. Don't put ice on stings, use heat if you can immerse the area in a warm bath. Put the tenderizer on the sting. Also, some locals DO NOT like to have their pictures taken. A voodoo thing. Don't think you can still get away with it by...

  • Make sure your sliding door is...

Make sure your sliding door is locked at night and when you're out at nigh,t go with friends and be aware of your surroundings like anywhere else. Oh, did I mention the little green monkeys overrunning the island? Actually they're not that small but they are a shade of green. Don't feed them and they won't come near you, especially on the beach.

Beware of cabs!! They will try to rip you off! It is not that they are expensive but also they will try to be with you as long as possible to charge you a lot!I just wanted to go Downtown from the airport and, even though we did not want him to, he ended up taking us to get a driving license and rent a car. We had to pay around 50 bucks for those...

  • Islanders in general pretty...

Islanders in general pretty friendly...but crime seems to be making its way there as well (but I haven't been there since 1994..could be different either way). A couple staying at our hotel left a wallet on the seat of their Jeep...THOUGHT they were in secluded area...not so. Secluded to YOU may NOT be...the locals obviously know the traps.
