Maria Islands by maartenw Hire a taxi from Vieux Fort to take you all the way up to the top of Cap Moule a Chique: the lighthouse. It is the very southern tip of Saint Lucia with stunning 360 degree views of the two Pitons, Mount Gimie in the north, the Maria Islands right beneath you and in the distant south Saint Vincent. La Tille waterfall by maartenw Less known then the Diamond Falls, therefor less visited. Access to La Tille is a road through banana plantations that ends in a kind of picknick area / herb garden (kept by a very kind rastaman). From there a short slippery path leads down to the waterfall. Enjoy your lunch afterwards under the mango tree. Leave a Comment

Along the Atlantic coast. by maartenw We hired a taxi for an entire day. If you're lucky, as we were, and have a very knowledgable and kind driver, it is a superb way of exploring the island. I'd absolutely recommend Winson from the New Frontier Taxi Association in Vieux Fort. He is not only literally a giant, but also knows everything, everyone and every place on the island. Cooking kassava bread by jessicadf If you take a tour, see if your driver will stop at a bakery that makes kassava bread. Kassava bread is made from the flour made from ground up manioc root. The bakery where we went, they have electric graters to grind the root in to paste. They they put it in a giant, metal, heated Chaussier to cook it to a dry cereal consistency (which can be packaged and used to make porridge). That cereal is then mixed with other ingredients to make patties of "bread", placed on a big banana leaf, which is placed on a large, flat, metal cooking surface, which is heated with firewood below. I tried the cherry and raisin bread and it was very tasty (and inexpensive). Leave a Comment

The Marina by gcmm Across from the Rex Saint Lucian and Reduit beach is Rodney Bay marina.... You can take there boat over or if inclined walk, it will take an half hour or so, depends on you pace. The marina area has some fine resturants and shopping.. Take a walk around and see all the boats, and relax with a drink by the water... Great little trip which cost next to nothing...... by travelqueen7 Enjoy a long walk through Mamiku Gardens. If you walk far enough you will get to an 18th century Estate. Through out the gardens are various flowers, plants and herbs. At the entrance they give you a map of the grounds and a directory of every plant they have grow and what it can be used for. Leave a Comment

Tal and Zohara on St.Lucian Beach by Martin_S. There is a beach located below the Pitons, Here you can see Zohara and Tal all alone there. To get there you need to enter the village located at the lower end of the road there and find a small path that goes off to the right as you approach, it takes you right to the beach. A wonderful place, we spent about 4 hours there and saw not another person. Leave a Comment

Active Fumerol in Soufriere volcano, St.Lucia by Martin_S. There is an active volcano near Soufriere which you can actually walk into the caldera. Here is a picture of one of the active fumerols near the marked path. The path is only along the outside because of an accident many years ago when a tour guide was explaining about the active fumerol that was concealed below the ground by jumping up and down when it opened below him. He was burned from the bottom of his feet to his chest. The actual fumerol he opened is shown in the picture. He survived the boiling, but was scared for life. From that point on the entrance to the active area was closed to visitors.... "True-or not"?? Leave a Comment

A Caribbean Eden is just one description of the award winning Soufriéére Estate's Diamond Botanical Gardens, Waterfall and Mineral Baths. Located within a lush narrow gorge one can understand the 1998 "Insider Award" being given to this haven recognizing it as one of the top 25 " nature experiences" within the Caribbean as well as the "Ste. Lisi Par Excellence" award for the best natural/historical tourism site on St. Lucia. Within the confines of these beautiful gardens lies the essence of French and British history in St. Lucia. In 1983, Mrs. Joan Devaux began designing and planting these gardens while continuing the restoration of the historical Mineral Baths that were began by her father, Mr. Andréé duBoulay. It was the French governor of St. Lucia, Baron de Laborie who first conceived the idea of constructing the baths in 1784. He sent samples of the mineral water to Paris to be Analyzed by the "Medicines du Roi". They were found to have the same medicinal properties as those of Aix les Bains in France and Aix la Chapelle in Germany. Upon this discovery, King Louis XVI of France allocated the funds to construct the baths for the benefit of his Majesty's troops. The Sulphur Springs from which the town of Soufriéére got its name are weak spots in the crust of an enormous collapsed crater, the result of a volcanic upheaval of gigantic proportion that took place some 40,000 years ago. Similar hot springs feed the mineral baths today and there is nothing more relaxing that a warm mineral bath within Diamond Botanical Gardens Leave a Comment

by steph4867 Pigeon Island National Landmark - St. Lucia's first national park is joined to the mainland by a causeway. On its west coast are two white-sand beaches. There's also a restaurant, Jambe de Bois, named after a wooden-legged pirate who once used the island as a hideout. Pigeon Island offers an Interpretation Centre, equipped with artifacts and a multimedia display on local history, ranging from the Amerindian occupation of a.d. 1000 to the Battle of the Saints, when Admiral Rodney's fleet set out from Pigeon Island and defeated Admiral De Grasse in 1782. The Captain's Cellar Olde English Pub lies under the center and is evocative of an 18th-century English bar. Pigeon Island, only 44 acres in size, got its name from the red-neck pigeon, or ramier, that once made this island home. It's ideal for picnics, weddings, and nature walks. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm, charging an entrance fee of EC$10 (U.S.$3.75). For more information, call the St. Lucia National Trust. Leave a Comment Phone: 758/452-5005).
