on the catarmaran in the Grenadines by LisaMJ A common day trip from St Lucia is the Grenadines. This was a highlight of our honeymoon. We caught a prop over to Union Island, and then onto a catarmaran to cruise the Grenadines. We stopped at 3 different beaches for snorkelling, sunbathing etc; The third was a hotel - Palm Island, where we could use the beach and the bar. This is the most wonderful, romantic secluded resort, and it on our list to stay at one day. The beaches we visited were out of this world, and we saw some great stuff while snorkelling too. The rum punch flows freely all day - but be careful, it's stronger than you'd think! The trip overall is highly recommended, and was appx. U$250 PP. Don;t be put off by the price - it's lovely to be able to visit another islands/s while you are in that part of the world. Leave a Comment

View from Pigeon Island by LisaMJ Pigeon Island was once used at Fort Rodney, to monitor French fleet on Martinique, which you can see from Pigeon Island on a clear day. It is now a National Nature Park. The picture here shows the view from the Island. It is scattered with old canons, lots of winding pathways, old bunkers, and theres a good trek to the top peak, which you'll need to wear good walking shoes for. It's worth a few hours of your time if you are staying in the Rodney Bay area, and there is a small cafe/restaurant there too. We caught a boat over with 'Captain Dave'. for $20 return for both of us. He has a small shack in Rodney Bay area, nearly opposite the Rex Papillon hotel! Leave a Comment

Adorable lizard in the gardens by jessicadf The tour from Castries to the Piton and back is a long and winding road... expect this tour to take at least three hours. That said, a wonderful break to get some fresh air and stretch your legs is a walk through the Toraille Waterfal gardens, a Heritage Tourism Site. There are a couple of paths through a garden filled with beautiful tropical flowers, a refreshing waterfall and some adorable little lizards. Leave a Comment

Waiting for our ride by gcmm If you can you must take one of the boat tours along the coast. This is were some of the tours begin. In the back ground you can see the Brig Unicorn, which is one of the boats used in the filming of the series "ROOTS". You may take a tour on this boat,i think one of them isa night party tour and it sounds like alot of fun.. our day started with a short ride from your hotel to the dock where you board a catamaran, sail down the west coast of St. Lucia, past two fishing villages and the deserted coves along the coast. wecame very close to the Majestic Pitons and enjoy their beauty. At Soufriere, we joined the mini buse which will take you to visit the Volcano/Sulphur Springs, and the Diamond Botanical Gardens/Waterfall and Mineral Baths. Lunch is served at a restaurant in Soufriere.(we ate at the captons house, which over looks the ocean,) then back to the boat to enjoy the rum punch, beer and sodas which are served throughout the day. we then headed to swim and snorkel at Anse Cochon and a visit to Marigot Bay before returning to dock where the buses will be waiting to take you back to your hotel. Learning to pack by gcmm One of our trips consisted of a banana plantation tour and ride down the river to the east coast of the island. It was a very informative tour. We got to see the Saint Lucia country side, especially along the east coast, which is very rough compared to the east coast. The tour of the banana platation was interesting. We learned all about growing banana's and how they harvest them and pack them.. What was interesting was that each banana plant or tree only grows one crop and no more...The plantation was once a sugar and coconut plantation but lack of profit and competition hurt the industry. We were able to look around and view the old ovens were they would roast the coconuts... We than took a boat ride down the river to the Atlantic ocean and walked around for awhile than proceded to the house to have a fantastic local lunch and watch the women pack banana's. A great trip for everyone to take. Bus pick up right at the hotel(Rex) and drop off also... Boa by gcmm Another must tour is the jungle / rainforest tours. Again there are different ones offered so check to see info on each. Our tour consisted of a early pick up at our hotel and a bus ride to the rainforest park. We than had a local brunch/breakfast and were given some food for the trek. Our hike was a 3-4 hour journey through the lush tropical jungle. Our guide said we were lucky this day as we saw almost every animal that we could see, except the deadly fer de lance snake, which was o.k by us. We were able to see the Saint Lucia Parrot, land crabs, and one boa , which was sunning him/her self. One couple we taled to a day later said they did not see any animals at all.. Chances are though you will see some... The trail starts out nice but at the half way point it really turns bad, small and wet( it will rain remember).Once on the other side we were able to swim in the Diamond falls mineral srings and hot baths, followed by a fantastic lunch. We than took a bus ride down to Soufriere for a boat trip back to the harbor and hotel. We arrived back to the hotel between 7-8 PM. It was a fantastic day. Leave a Comment

Showing the process by gcmm Continuing on our tour around, we stopped at a batik shop. You may ask what is that. Well it is a process that they use to print and dye items, say carry bags etc... As you can see there are different steps along the way. It all begins with putting wax on the item and by forming what design you want the dye will not stick to the wax, so you are left with the design. This process is than continued with more designs and wax until they reac there finished product. I must say that they are quite nice and we still have a travel shoulder pack from our first fist there in 1995, and the colors are still pretty good... Leave a Comment

The Country side by gcmm This is more of a sight seeing trip than anything else. On almost any or all of the tour excursions, you will get to see the beautiful country side of Saint Lucia. It has to be one of best islands for views and lush tropics in the carribian... This is a view of the river outlet we were going to on our banana platation tour... View of the Bay by gcmm Staying at the Rex Saint Lucian Hotel offers a wide varity of things to do and see. One of those is a trip over to Pigeon Point. You can see The point from the hotel as the Rex is in the middle of the bay. We took a day tour from the hotel, which consisted of a boat ride over to the shore close to the point. We took a stroll along the coast on our way to the Fort Rodney on top of Pigeon Point. This are was were some of the firecast fighting between the French and the British took place. We look at all the old ruins of the base and fort. We also we educated on all the local plant life and what many of them were used for and some still are. Once up in the Point fort you can see why it was a major battle ground. You can everything for miles.Looking out in the distance you can see Martinque island on a clear day. After finishing up here we walked to other parts of the fort and down to the beach were we had a party, dancing, food, drink and some fun games for adults and children.(limbo contest). The food was excellent and it was a great time. Highly recommended Leave a Comment Address: West coast of the bayDirections: Gros Islet / rodney bay Rex Saint Lucian HotelWebsite: http://www.st-lucia.com/

Bubble bubble, toil and trouble by jessicadf Take a tour (or rent a car) to drive between the island's Pitons. The three mile gap between the Pitons is home to what was once the caldera of the island's volcano. It is now the Soufriere Development Foundation Ltd. Sulphur Springs. Go there and for $2.80US, a guide will walk you around to various viewing points. You can also see the remnants of the baths that were fed by the hot springs that Napoleon had created for the troops. If you can't stand the smell of sulphur and/or rotten eggs, either bring nose plugs or avoid this destination. ;-) Leave a Comment
