Places to eat in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

I noticed that most island businesses are family owned and operated as are the many small, quaint hotels and inns near Kingstown.

In the middle of downtown, or city center, is Basil's Bar & Restaurant (sister to the famous one on Mustique) and the quaint, lovely Cobblestone Inn located in a historic 1814 building that was once a sugar warehouse. Basil's is on the first floor and the Inn is upstairs, easily reached through an arched passage into a gorgeous courtyard.
The ambience is old world as if you were in colonial days-with a modern, clean, and simple twist.

Basil's has a cozy bar as you first walk in the door - air conditioned and perfect for having a cool drink and relaxing. The restaurant often has a lunch buffet; a menu is available for dinner. We had a tasty West Indian buffet that was just right for lunch after wandering around Kingstown.

In addition to the wonderful food at Young Island, the Camelot Inn in the capital city of Kingstown is well worth a special trip. The inn is located in the old French Governor's mansion and largely caters to business travelers - which is too bad because it is gorgeous, but has no beach and, well, location is everything. However, the upside is that, if you make dinner reservations for Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights, you'll practically have the place to yourself. The Camelot Inn is definitely worth one night away from the all-inclusive. (Also, it's a great hotel if you do not mind a ride to the beach or swimming in a swimming pool.)
The Camelot Inn's location is both its weakest point and its best asset. Because it is in Kingstown, SVG's capital, - actually it is in the hilltop suburb of Kingstown Park - it has no beach and is therefore not a good vacation spot. However, an evening's dinner looking down over the lights of Kingstown, or in the splendid dining room, is quite beautiful. In fact, I went to Camelot's for dinner two hours early just to watch the sunset. Quite beautiful, which is saying a lot because Kingstown itself - notwithstanding a handful of interesting buildings - is on the whole unremarkable.

I can't tell you how incredible it was to have dinner out on the deck of our bungalow high above on a cliff overlooking the sea, with a constant breeze, and under the starriest sky you could ever imagine. We took all of our meals in or room or at the beach save for the first night. There is only one official restaraunt on the island. It is located in a central part of the island behind the dock where you arrive. It is very spacious with a comfortable bar and tons of out-door space. Truly a beautiful setting but why dine there with all of the other guests when you have your own palacial little palace overlooking the ocean.

Favorite Dish: Lobster done ten different ways. The food was very good. Not tremendous but vey good. We ordered three mains every night just to try different things but one of them was always lobster. Why not? There were other good seafood dishes, steaks, chicken, pastas etc... We ate alot of seafood. It was fresh and very tasty. Lobster rolls at the beach mainly for me. They offered a great selection from the lunch buffet and fantastic grilled hot dogs beleive it or not. They also offer a plethora of fresh fruits and salads. Breakfast was great also fruits cheeses,cereal, bacon, eggs whatever. Stay away from the pancakes.

We stayed on Young Island and they offered an European Plan (breakfast and dinner). Food was to die for. So were the drinks.
All meals were served outside under a tiki hut with real table clothes and silverware. Moonlight nights overlooking the water and steel drums in the background.

Favorite Dish: Coffee and pastries.

Restaurants are a strange thing here. Open two hours it seemed for breakfast and lunch and maybe three hours for dinner.
The restaurant at young Island is pretty good and compared to the big Island's other restaurants is definitely a cut above.
A wide selection of homemade breads each night including coconut bread!

Favorite Dish: A popular local soup is nasty looking but really quite good !
