Pirates of the imagination

The leeward side of St. Vincent, just like any other island of the East Caribbean Windward island group, presents the visitor with completely different picture. Unlike the rugged shores of the Atlantic side beaten constantly by the raging surf, the Caribbean side has the placid waters akin more to lake waters than to sea ones. One of the picturesque coves called Walllilabou was picked by some film studio guru for the purpose of being a background to one of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. It is not only plainly beautiful but calm as well which must have been a prerequisite for the company so the shooting goes smoothly without people falling overboard or becoming seasick. From my perspective is has the merits to be an attractive nature spot on its own but for the tourism business it helps if the promotional effort includes CV details such as being a spot where a Hollywood drama has...

St Vincent is virtually untouched by tourism in comparison with the rest of SVG - so do me a favour - when you go - don't stay in a resort or on yonge island - support the locals - there are lots of quaint places to stay!!!

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is really too poor and underdeveloped to have tourist traps as such. However, the small village of Wallilabou is used as a lunch stop off on the way back from the Falls of Baleine. While there, you may be greeted by many young men trying to sell you very unremarkable necklaces made from sea shells. Be prepared. If you feel guilty about being a rich American - like I do - you can haggle a little and buy something. Otherwise, you can politely say, 'No thanks.' Also, be advised, one thing that SVG is not is a shopper's paradise. There are a few boutiques on Bequia, Mustique and the Carenage Resort on Canouan that have a few nice things, otherwise, probably forget it. The stores in Kingstown are generally mediocre, although improving of late.
