    Fish Fry

    by Irina80 Updated Jul 2, 2009

There is a fish fry event going on every wednesday on Taino beach, starts at 7pm, several eateries set up frying pans on the beach and start frying away everything they put an eye on:), there is fish, chicken, conch, conch fritters (yum), fries, peas-n-rice, etc., a plate of fried snapper with rice-n-peas and cole slaw - 10$. It was pretty good, people were laughing, eating, drinking, dancing on the beach...nice event.

    Lucayan National Park

    by eschroeder12 Written Aug 27, 2006

Again, being young and never yet been out of the US, I expected something different from the term National Park. However, like the rest of the island, there's no money. The park will give you a good idea of the natural vegetation, flora and fauna. There are a couple caves that you can walk to the edge of but not really enter.

    Bonfire Party

by fmaven Written Sep 15, 2005

One of the activities you can arrange to do is a bonfire party. All the Bahama Mamas (or fruit punch) you can handle in a relaxed setting by the beach. There were games, a demonstration of how to release a conch from its shell, limbo, a fire dancer, and of course, a big bonfire. It's a pretty low-key thing and OK for families.

It was actually a lot of fun and we had a great time talking with other partygoers. It cost about 40-45 USD a person though.

Smoke one! (Cuban cigar, that is)

by iilovepiink Written Jul 26, 2005

Ah the Bahamas! Where the drinking age is 18 and Cuban cigars are widely available. You MUST MUST MUST try a Cohiba. I woudn't try to bring back any cigars because customs are strict but there are "cigarrillos," cigarettes with cuban tobacco in them that can easily be brought back if wrapped in dirty clothes. ; )

Parasailing for an Unobstructed View of the Island

by deecat Updated Apr 27, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I had never parasailed before we did so on the Grand Bahama Island. It was a memorable experience. I was so frightened that I was gripping the harness until my hands had rope marks on them!

First, I walked in the shallow water out to the floating raft. Then I was actually lifted up to the platform. (Incidentally, when the young man lifted me up, he acidentally pinched my arm so hard that I had a bruise for two weeks.)

Then I was attached to a harness and parachute. A speed-boat offshore pulled me 400 feet into the air for about a five-minute spin. It seemed as though I could see forever; I assumed that was what flying felt like. Finally, I was gently brought back down.

At the time, it cost about $30.00; however, I think it costs about $40.00 today.

    Sharks!

by Winch Updated Nov 7, 2004

Hungry as a shark? Ready for a feeding frenzy? Then head out to the Port of Freeport, and have a fresh seafood dinner at Pier One.

Oh, yeah. The sharks in the waters below the restaurant are hungry, too.

At Pier One, diners are treated to a delicious meal while the sharks enjoy one of their own when the staff dumps scraps over the railing. (You're allowed to join in with your own leftovers.) A sure delight for non-squeamish kids, too!

Garden of the Groves, A Natural Paradise

by deecat Written Jul 15, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

For a place to pause and reflect on the natural beauty of the Bahamas, Garden of the Groves "fits the bill." Garden of the Groves is 12 acres of winding paths, cascading waterfalls, a picturesque chapel on the hill, and a variety of local animals. In addition, there is a petting zoo for children.
I was most interested in the botanical gardens with incredible Flora. But I also enjoyed the trails for bird watchers, the beautiful Grand Bahama Park, and the wonderous waterfalls. It was fun just to try to identify indigenous plants, flowers and wildlife from around the world.
The photograph was taken in the late 1960's on one of our visits when we stayed in a friend's condo. It's so strange to see us so young!
There is a small cafe called Palmetto Cafe, which is a good place to stop for a drink or a snack. While there, visit Julia the parrot.
