Bahama Mama leaving the dock

The Bahama Mama is a large motor catamaran. The first time we came to Lucaya the Bahama Mama was coming out the channel at dusk as we were coming in the channel after a long day of sailing from Bimini. They very politely let us get through the narrow entrance channel before they came out because they take up most of the width of the channel.

Some folks really like these trips, but some of them are out and out booze cruises where people just see how fast they can drink a lot of alcohol. The crews then have to deal with folks that are falling down drunk.

Unique Suggestions: If you do get on a booze cruise, try to exercise some moderation in the speed with which you are killing your brain cells. Maybe you should eat something first.

Fun Alternatives: Try to pick a cruise that has more to it than just drinking (The Bahama Mama has several alternative cruises such as a dinner cruise).

Dolphin Swim and SCUBA

UNEXSCO dock (blue) from the Fat Man's Nephew

UNESCO has regular captive dolphin swims which must rake in the money for them. Since captive dolphins rarely live more than a year in captivity in these kinds of conditions I feel that using these creatures for the tourists to ogle is wrong.

Unique Suggestions: The SCUBA operation does not have a very good reputation among dedicated divers either for flexibility or safety. But it may be good for novices to do shallow dives.

Fun Alternatives: There are other dive operations on Grand Bahama, and there is a wild dolphin swim in Bimini - you are not guarenteed to see dolphins, but the dolphins have chosen to come and swim with you if you do. I understand that they have about an 80% sucess rate.
