No-see-ums...You can see them

When the wind is not blowing by the beaches the no-see-ums are relentless if you do not have any protection. In evening I suggest long pants made of thin cotton and closed shoes so you can still relax in the weather. They tend to get the legs and feet since they stay low to the ground so your upper body is less at risk. They are not poisonous or anything just big and by the dozens on Andros. Normally a no-see-um gets it's name because you can't see them and in places like Florida you feel a slight prick of the skin but it is nothing to fret about and you have no welts afterword. NOT HERE... I was in a pub on the water on a still evening just as the sun went down(that is when they strike) and there was some open fruit behind the bar (appealing for them), I did not remember to put on bug spray earlier and I got to sit and see my legs being attacked by about 50 big seeable no-see-ums crazily crawling and biting my legs(I was dinner). Luckily someone had some spray and later the bugs moved on. Even when you have spray it only helps, some people who are vulnerable to them put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on their lower legs and this helps, also skin so soft made by the Avon company on a regular basis helps. Eat spicy food and don't wear perfume. Lesson learned... My legs itched horribly for 2 weeks, my socks made me itch when I walked, I wear combat boots for work and so I was stuck unable to itch(although I shouldn't). I could not sleep my legs itched so much and my welts were huge. I felt like I had severe poison ivy on my legs... I had bites in between my toes(devoured). It took a month for my legs to look right again.See picture below, it all seems funny to me now but that really sucked at the time.

Andros Island is not a tourist destination in a sense. It's more for the native Bahamians a place to live and for the occasional adventurous tourist a place to fish or scuba. It hails itself as the......

Andros Island - No tourists, just sand and water

I flew to Andros Island in a US Navy cargo plane - something like a C-3, but I can't recall what it actually was. From Jacksonville, it was a pretty long flight, especially since I had to be strapped...
