People, The Bahamas
We liked the uniforms of the Bahamian police that was directing traffic everywhere, white gloves and all. I asked the one in the photo if it was ok to take a photo of him, and he just smiled at us ( after giving us directions) and said "of course".
A white Bahamian is called a 'Conky Joe'. There are quite a few and most have family ties to the UK. This can be seen in the National Flag. Even though the Bahamas is independant they are still members of the Commonwealth of Nations and the Union Flag in the upper corner attests to that.
Bahamians love US Football and are almost all Miami Dolphin fans. I played in a pick up game on the beach. The Bahamians who played were fast but did not hit hard and whined when you pounded them.
The locals in Turks & Caicos and the Out islands in the Bahamas are wonderful, gentle people. Very kind. Always smiling and waving to you as you go by. For the most part, they seemed spiritually in tune, generous of spirit and kind-hearted.
Bahamian hospitality and culture is warm and rich. Call the People to People Unit, Ministry of Tourism Nassau. Tel : 242 326 5371 or Fax : 242 356 0434
