beach on paradise island

If you want to head to a beach - there's a fine and long one near Nassau.. it's called Cable Beach and it's the one right on front of the many all-inclusive posh resorts of the island. basically it's a fine beach, but it can get very crowded.

If you're looking for a quier beach, head to the neighbouring Paradise Island: cabbage beach is just as pretty (and possibly prettier) and a lot more secluded, especially if you go in the opposite direction of the Atlantis resort.

Equipment: Wear some coral shoes in case you happen to walk in a place where there are sea-urchins.

there might be no better place in the world for scuba diving or snorkeling then the Bahamas. even minimal expirience let you have a colorful time underwater. scuba diving schools are everywhere, so brush up your skills or learn new ones. such rewarding and peaceful passtime activity.

Equipment: buying the snorkeling gear in Nassau is very cheap

Just below Fort Charlotte is where you can find a lovely small cricket ground with a rather parched green. Cricket is played on weekends from March to December and is free to watch. The pavilion also has a restaurant.

Dive boat

No matter where you stay, you will be offered excursions such as scuba diving right in the lobby of your hotel. They will recommend dive expeditions, or you can go out on one of the others that they don't recommend. The difference here, is that the ones you will have recommended to you, are very simple, easy dives, with guides used to dealing with tourists, multiple safety checks etc. They are geared for the novice or infrequent diver. If you go out on your own, what you basically get is a ride out to the reef and someone who goes down with you. It depends on your abilities and confidence.

Equipment: Taking an independent excursion is fast paced and is really geared towards the seasoned diver. With twelve divers you go out fast, you come back fast. Safety checks go quickly and there is little fuss before going under. These are not for beginners, there isn't a lot of handholding involved.

Anchor Out

CSY HOMEFREE anchored in Nassau

There are several places in Nassau Harbour where people anchor.

I did not want to do that even before Bob's heart attack. First there is a tremendous current in the harbor - the water just races through there. That means that the bottom is scoured out and the holding isn't very good. Plus the tide changes the direction of the current 4 times a day, which gives additional possibilities for the anchors to break loose. And there is also a lot of traffic, which means a lot of boat wakes.

But lots of people do anchor and seem to be perfectly happy doing so.

If you are checking in with customs and immigration, you will have to go in to a dock.

Equipment: Good ground tackle

A good dinghy and a way to secure the motor to it so it can't be stolen. We prefer to have the dinghy on davits because if it is in the water it will drag and slow us down. But that way, it takes longer to get going, as you have to lower it first.

Nassau Harbour Club Hotel and Marina

S/A RosalieAnn at the dock

Very nice marina, with restaurants, a pool, laundry facilities (restricted hours), and security. There is a car available for transport to other places (which we took to the dentist). The girls at the desk and the dockmaster are all very nice people.

Equipment: In the photo you see that we have fenders out on the side away from the finger pier. That's because the slips are a bit narrow and there's a lot of current and some wakes in this area, so the boat next to us could knock into us.

Cost is $1.00/foot plus a mandatory charge for water/day and electricity is metered.
