If you are looking for an adventure, instead of following along behind a noisy, expensive, annoying tour group or as the cruise lines like to call it a 'shore excursion', here are some tips for Nassau:
1. First, do some research before you get there. Look at lots of maps of the island of New Providence and try to find out where everything is that you would like to do. If you get acquanted with the lay of the land before you get there, it becomes less frightening to strike off on your own.
-Also, look for bus schedules and maps of where the buses run if you want to be immediately immersed in the culture by taking a jitney.
2. Talk to the local people once you get there. Ask them where things are, and what THEY like to do for fun on their island. Remember, they LIVE there.
3. Stop off on your journey if you see something that looks interesting. This may be the best part of getting out on your own. You don't have to wait for a tour group and so you can stop where you want and go where you want. When my husband and I took the bus up past Cable Beach we saw Fort Charlotte on the top of a hill overlooking the road, and we stopped immediately and got off the bus, and then later we got back on another bus as it came along. The buses come along every 10-15 minutes.
4. Finally, just get out of Nassau and see the rest of the island. Nassau is not the only town in New Providence Island. (I recommend the beaches in Sandyport)

If you are coming to the Bahamas, consider taking at LEAST a one- day private sailing or yacht cruise, if you want to get away from the crowds and busy Nassau and Paradise Island. The islands of the Bahamas stretch out over 100,000 square miles of water with over 700 islands in all, if you visit Nassau and Paradise Island, and think you have 'been to the Bahamas' you will be mistaken and disapointed. One of the best things we did was to combine a hotel stay with a sailing trip to the Exuma Cays (only 30 miles from Nassau but a whole world away). The Exumas have the best beaches (you can relax all day without seeing another soul) crystal clear waters- great diving and snorkeling, HEALTHY reefs, abundant seafood (our captain caught us fresh lobster and grouper!) It was fantastic, really relaxing to look out over the water at night under a million stars! in the Upper Exumas there are no towns, no casinos and no nightlife to speak of, but if you want that stay in Nassau. If you like private white sand beaches, quiet calm anchorages (no boats or jet skis running around) fresh seafood and great snorkeling, come here. There is also the Land and Sea park a little further down the island chain. The boat was very spacious, lots of room for 6-8, showers, bathrooms, double cabins, covered area, huge nets in the front for sunbathing or stargazing. And it costs a lot less than we thought- we brought the groceries and drinks aboard and it was WAY less than a hotel and all those meals out in so-so restaurants, we paid only $700 a day to have the boat to ourselves with captain for six of us! Plus did I mention we caught fresh conch, lobster and fish, and we prepared it right on the boat (with the captain's help) and it was the best seafood we had on the whole time in the Bahamas. We want to go back soon! And Captain Peter was just great- easygoing, fun, but very safe.
He has a web site at www.southerncross-charters.com He will do one day trips and overnight trips of 3-7 nights. Well worth the experience!!!

Give parasailing a shot! My husband had never done it before so we went parasailing. We went early sunday morning, so we got a boat to ourselves. The views up top were fantastic and if you have never been parasailing, this is definitely the place to start! The feeling is hard to get used to -- it feels like you are floating midair!

Rent a jet ski on Paradise Island. If you rent them for one hour (make sure to bargain with them!), you can take a ride over to Blue Lagoon Island and see the dolphins. Officially you cant go into the area, but no one bothers you about it. We tried to book a dolphin tour seperately, but they were sold out, so this was the next best thing. The water is unbelievably clear, no matter how far out you go!

Unfortunately, I did not take advantage of snorkeling or jet skiing because we were with our beautiful daughter, but if you do decide to go, please take advantage. The water in the Bahamas is so beautiful and clear.

I did not do this, but a number of people I met did and loved it, there is a dive spot on the Southwest side of the island called Stuart Cove, appearantly the best spot on the Nassau Coast. I found their website and listed it below.

We took an afternoon and went sailing out to an amazing reef teeming with tropical fish and living coral. We were staying at the Atlantis and it was very convenient as the Catamaran was right in the beautiful Marina. They took us snorkeling and then we sailed and danced the whole way back to the dock. The Atlantis is fun but so busy on the beach and this was a great way to see the real beauty of the water and other local islands. It felt like a vacation from our vacation

Take a booze cruise around the island's harbor and outlaying keys. It's not that much and you get to see some history if you're not too plastered. The cruises usually go by some old English forts, which are nice to see between rum shots.

Prince George's Wharf is where the cruise ships dock. It is also the place to catch a water taxi or a boat tour.

Hire a boat or take an excursion so you can look back to land as well as to look out to sea. There are many tour operators who are licensed, ask at your hotel reception for more details.
