Queen Elizabeth Staircase by XanderDone Carved out of the Nassau Bedrock, this impressive structure leading to Fort Fincastle orginally had 66 stairs, but now there are only 65. At the top is the water tower and fort, at the bottom is an astounding view of the tiers and some vendors awaiting a good bargain. Leave a Comment Address: Queen Elizabeth Avenue South end

Flamingos, gardens, animals and fun! by chasesruffhouse Fantastic place to spend an entire afternoon! The 5-½ acre park is part jungle, part gardens and home to hundreds of beautiful mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world, including many endangered species. You get to mingle with these animals in a very intimate setting - some are in cages, some walking around (LuLu the pot bellypig!) and some are in large enclosed "pits" that are open at the top. If youve been to Nassau and are looking for something out of the way, not crowded and interesting - this is the place! We shot 2 rolls of film in this park! Self-guided maps and employees everywhere encourage you to see all the exhibits and animals. The entrance fee was cheap, I want to say $7 or $10 US. We did make a donation to their fantastic park! Address: 5 mins from the cruise ship dock!Phone: 242-323-5806Directions: I would recommend taking a taxi or the #10 local bus. If you take the bus, it is a short uphill walk to the gardens through a residential area (that I would not make at night) but safe during the day. A taxi will take you right ot the entrance.Website: www.ardastra.com

by Willettsworld On the way to the Water Tower and Fort Fincastle, take Elizabeth Ave which is a passage through a 90 foot deep gorge. The passageway was cut from solid limestone by slaves, beginning in the 1790's, with the intent of constructing a roadway through Prospect Ridge. The passageway features seats in cool shade and is nice to stop by on your way through. At the end is the Queen's Staircase which features 66 steps up out of the gorge. Leave a Comment

Ferry Boat by XanderDone This is a mode of transportation from the Town to Paradise Island. The port of entry in the town is off of Woodes Rogers Walk at Prince George Wharf and at Paradise Island it is a little PI dock directly underneath the Paradise Island Western Bridge (the one where traffic goes north-bound). The fare is $3 a person, one-way. They try to make it sound like a deal by stating on their signs that it is "Only $6 Round-Trip!" It give great views of the harbour of Nassau. Reccomended to go to the other side via ferry one way, and a taxi the other. Leave a Comment

Horse-drawn carriage, Nassau, Bahamas by cruisingbug We came to Nassau for a half-day cruise stop. Near the pier you will find horse-drawn carriages, $10 per person for a tour of Nassau. Our guide was Molly; our horse was Showtime. Although Molly was a bit cynical about the nation's history and current inhabitants ("Bahamas is for making booze and babies"), it was a good way to get an overview of the town and see some historic buildings we wouldn't have otherwise noticed or known what they were. Surrey Horse by XanderDone The Surrey Tours are unique and very tourist-oriented. What it is is a 20-minute tour of the town in a horse-drawn carriage. It costs $10 a person, and two-to-three people per carriage. The horses rest from 1pm-3pm in the summer and 1pm-2pm in the winter. Seems like everyone who experienced it ended their journey very pleased with their purchase. Sir Milo Butler Statue by pieter_jan_v This square is a point to relax and have a lunch break. At the harbour side the local Tourist Office is located and at the other side the Queen Elizabeth Statue, the House of Assembly and the Supreme Courthouse located in the back can be seen. by Gra8ful Nassau is the seat of the national government. The Bahamian Parliament comprises two houses -- a 16-member Senate (Upper House) and a 40-member House of Assembly (Lower House) -- and a ministerial cabinet headed by a prime minister. Parliament Square's pink, colonnaded government buildings were constructed in the early 1800s by Loyalists who came to the Bahamas from North Carolina. The square is dominated by a statue of a slim young Queen Victoria that was erected on her birthday, May 24, in 1905. In the immediate area are a half dozen magistrates' courts (open to the public; obtain a pass at the door to view a session). Behind the House of Assembly is the Supreme Court. Its four-times-a-year opening ceremonies (held the first weeks of January, April, July, and October) recall the wigs and mace-bearing pageantry of the Houses of Parliament in London. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band is usually on hand for the event. COST: Free. OPEN: Weekdays 10-4. Address: Bay St., Nassau, New Providence Island, BahamasPhone: 242/322-7500Directions: Bay St., Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas, In the middle of the Square.

Located behind Fort Charlotte west of downtown Nassau, the Botanical Garden offers a peaceful break from the bust downtown area. When I visited there was hardly anybody here. The garden was laid out in 1951 on the site of an old rock quarry that once supplied stones for construction during colonial times. The entance garden is a bit bear and barren but overall it features more than 600 species of tropcial plants plus lily ponds and a waterfall donated by the Chinese. Leave a Comment Address: Chippenham RdDirections: 200 yards off W Bay St, follow the road round to the left and the entrance is just past the bend on the left.
