There are two memorable sights you will see when you arrive in Nassau by ship, and you will most likely see them from the air as well. They are the "Hog Island Lighthouse" and the Atlantis Hotel Resort -- the lighthouse at one end of Paradise Island and the Atlantis Hotel Resort at the other; both structures rising from the sands of Paradise Island.

Paradise Island, once called Hog Island, is a narrow finger of land jutting into the bluest ocean. It is reachable by boat or the bridge from the New Providence Island mainland. Between the lighthouse and the Atlantis are a few magnificent homes belonging to the rich and often the famous. If you take a water taxi from Prince George Wharf, it is extremely likely that a "guide" on board will explain to you everything you see before arriving on Paradise Island and this includes in some cases who these homes belong to. It's quite fascinating.

In the 1st accompanying picture, you will see the Hog Island Lighthouse constructed around 1817. This pretty little lighthouse stands at the far rocky tip of Paradise Island where ships pass on their way into the harbor.

In the 2nd picture you will see a British Colonial style home painted a deep, ochre yellow. I'm pretty sure the "guide" said this house once belonged to John Lennon of the Beatles. My husband thinks the "guide" said it was Mick Jagger of Rolling Stones fame. I still think it was Lennon!!

The 3rd picture is of the beautiful Atlantis Hotel with its Italian-style bridge connecting two of the soaring towers. It really is quite a beautiful place. The Atlantis once was called "Paradise Island Resort" when it was owned by Donald Trump, Merv Griffin, et al. It is now owned by Sol Kershner who was responsible for changing the name to Atlantis.

Check the info. desk at the "Festival Place" for tour information to Hog Island Lighthouse. Check the info. center in the middle of the casino at Atlantis for tour times, and to purchase tickets for tours.

Potter's Cay lie's half way between Nassau town and Paradise Island and is where the town's main market is located which sells fruit, veg and fish of all types including conch (you can buy the empty shells here). Potter's Cay is where you can catch the Fast Ferries boat to other islands such as Harbour Island and Spanish Wells. The Cay is where the main access bridges arc to and from Paradise Island.

    Paradise Is.: Free Beaches

  • Despite what your travel agent might tell you, there are 4-5 "free" beach access points on Paradise Island. Grab one of the local tourist maps, and they will show you where they are (15-20 minute walk from shuttle boat ramp).

A cab driver will take you directly to the entrance points.

Once on the "free" beach - you can wonder along and enjoy some of the amenities of the Hotel's & Resort's beaches.

You can buy reasonably priced drinks on the beach - and even pay a little less for the jet skiiing or banana boat rides

Paradise Island is one of Nassau's thriving resort areas. The center of it all is Atlantis, which South African developer Sol Kerzner has turned into one of the most complete resort-casino complexes in the world. The huge property includes a 14-acre/6-hectare water scape with cascades, a lazy river for tubing and a lagoon for snorkeling. Some attractions are off-limits to those not staying at the resort.

Paradise Island not only features the huge, rather dominating Atlantis resort but other hotels, apartments and marinas which make for a plesant walk around.

The island was once used for raising pigs and became known as Hog Island before multi-millionaires started to build home and hotels. The island now features an 18-hole golf course, casinos, marinas, shopping malls and a sports centre/spa.

The casino here is simply up to Vegas standards. They have a range of tables, all of which seem to hum with activity.

  • Atlantis is a unique hotel and resort that everyone should visit at least once when in Nassau. Paradise Island has many resorts and nice beaches as well as many watersport activities. Also lots of clubs and nightlife.

  • OK, you all probably know about this and there are probably about 1 million tips on this, but if you havn't heard, go to the Atlantis Resort! It's so huge and has a huge casino, a mall of shops and an aquarium. The only thing is that unless you are a guest or pay the 30 dollars to play on the beach. My suggestion is to walk through the mall or outside to the hotel next to it. They have free beaches and shady spots.

Paradise Island is not so full force as the hectic mayhem of Nassau! To get there either take a taxi across the bridge or get a little boat to whizz you over, at the foot of the bridge. It's a small journey but one worth making!
